Can anyone tell me if a permit is required to cycle on at Rhodes and where to buy?

Yes, you are supposed to have a valid "activity card" from SANParks to ride anywhere on Table Mountain (including Rhodes Mem). You can buy this from the SANParks office in the city centre or from the one in Tokai. You cannot buy it at Rhodes Mem. The "activity card" is valid for a whole year. You cannot buy a day ticket unless you go to one of the above offices. There is no consistent access control at Rhodes Mem, unlike other areas controlled by SANParks (like Silvermine, Cape Point, or as it used to have in Tokai before the fire). That is why anyone (rider robber or rapist) can enter and why the area is consistently plagued by bike-jackings.

 

Ps. I have refused to renew my "activity card" until SANParks open Tokai again.
