Back Pedal Conversion

I was wondering if it's possible to convert a back pedal brake to a freewheel. My son's 16 inch bike is fitted with a back pedal or coaster brake. I added a normal front caliper brake, but really want to get rid of the back pedal brake and add a caliper brake to the rear wheel.

Is this possible?

I took the hub apart and it looks like the one described in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wNF38oB6IYk

I suspect it's not possible - will need to get a freewheel hub, and that's going to be more than the value of the bike...

I would open up the hub and just remove the brake shoes

Tried it. When you back pedal, it doesn't brake anymore, but you can only go back half a rev before it stops. You can't wind it back continuously like a freewheel.

I would say that you need to replace the sprocket with a free wheel sprocket as well as removing the the brake pads.  Depending on how yours is attached you can get a cheap one.  I replaced mine on a spinning bike.

I wish all spinning bikes were like that...
