So my 2c: Two months seems a bit long BUT that depends on what you have done and how strict you followed the advice you got and also the quality of advice you got?

 

If I was you I would look at treating the symptom and the cause. Most folks are happy just to treat the symptom and then neglect the cause. So your problem will eventually return or morph into something else.

 

Someone mentioned cleat alignment. Sure. You could rotate your knee inwards/outwards during pedal strokes causing the inflammation. But the reason for the rotation might sit in your SIJ

 

Someone mentioned your hammies being stiff. Being stiff and then stretching it can make things worse. Your hammies might feel stiff but that does not mean that they are "shortened". By stretching them you could be "lengthening" the muscle and now cause crap elsewhere.

 

Point is: Go to a pro. Have your body alignment checked. Not just in your knee. Find the cause and treat it.

Its just over 4 months now. There is good progress albeit slowly. General pain has subsided to a point where stairs and driving is not a problem. I still had severe pain when cycling and decided to see Dr Daan du Plessis. MRI revealed a small tear in the meniscus and damaged tendon. The tendon is the main cause of all the pain and can be fixed by specific stretching. The tear is the cause of irritation behind the knee and can be fixed with a small operation.I must decide on this... At least im back to jogging short distances and hitting the gym.

There is a lesson to learn from my mistakes - listen to your body.
