Shinamo 105 (5800, 2x11) front derailleur problems

So I bought my SO a new Merida Reacto with 105 groupset.

The braze on derailleur's 'lever arm' where the cable attach (sorry, don't know what this is really called) sticks out laterally so far that it scratches her calf badly when in the smaller chain ring.  Yes, she does have huge calves, but can't do anything about that...

Any suggestions?

Only alternative I can see is to swap it out with the older 10 speed FD?

Any help would be appreciated.

Have a look at SRAM front mechs too. They will be compatible with the Shimano shifter

The 10 spd 105 won't work.

I am amazed that you have a problem as the 11 spd is a very similar width to the 10 spd.  The cable lever arm is even more vertical.  The set up of the 11 spd FD is a bit tricky, with very high cable tension, a choice of cable routing and a frame spacer bolt to prevent the derailleur from rotating.

If all is set right on the FD you may get away with a couple of pedal washers to give a bit of space.

Hi David

Thanx for the reply.  Derailleur is set up correctly.  The problem comes from the cable attachment arm that swings out too far when in the small blade.

The picture below shows the old (5700) and new (5800) FD.

Any other suggestions, besides for washers to increase the Q-factor?

I would have a heart to heart with the shop that sold it to you - downgrade to 10 speed maybe.

The leverage ratio on the old deraileur will not be the same (the cable through the shifter will move more than it should on a shift). I already dislike this design.
