JOIN US FOR A LATE-AFTERNOON PEDAL IN PAARL

 

Bring your family and friends and join us at the Backsberg Wine Estate near Paarl on Friday 2 December for a family-friendly, social off-road ride to celebrate the end of the week and the start of the ‘silly season’. All cyclists older than 18 who enter the PPA TWILIGHT FAMILY MTB @ BACKSBERG by 14h00 on 28 November will receive a free bottle of Backsberg’s Tread Lightly wine!

 

The two routes are easy and non-technical. The new 4 km route will be open to everyone, from cyclists to walkers and joggers. This is a great route for novice riders and beginners, and offers a total elevation gain/loss of less than 100m. You’ll pedal around some of the scenic areas of Backsberg, with the popular section around the farm dam still part of the new route. Kids older than 5 are most welcome to enter this route, provided they are accompanied by an adult (cyclist, runner or walker) at all times.

 

The new 15 km route offers a flatter, more family-friendly ride than in 2015, incorporating sections of the neighbouring farms, for a total elevation gain/loss of just over 300m. The 15 km route will again incorporate the hugely popular water point on the neighbouring Niel Joubert Estate where ‘bubbly’, cooldrink and sweets are on offer. Kids older than 10 are welcome to enter the 15 km route, provided they are accompanied by an adult at all times.

 

The course will be closed at 20h00 and participants will be re-routed before that should they not be able to complete their route before dark.

 

There will be no seeding or timing and we encourage you to ride with your friends. Instead of lucky draw prizes, the best fancy-dress outfits (yes you have to pedal with your outfit!) will win prizes. The theme for 2016 is “Something red, something gold”.

 

In order to keep entry fees and event costs low, participants will not receive medals for this informal event, but all entrants will receive an event-specific bike board at registration and something special at the finish.

 

Backsberg Restaurant will offer tasty food for sale, and we invite you to relax with us after your ride. Pre-ordered picnic baskets will also be available (please contact Rozanne@pedalpower.org.za for more information). Wine as well as craft beer will for sale (please Drink & Drive responsibly and organise a designated driver). There will be a jumping castle for the kids, as well as music at the finish.

 

Entries close on Monday 28 November at 14h00 or as soon as 600 entries have been received. Late entries will be taken at the event if the event cut-off was not reached by 28 November.

 

‘BRING A BOOK’ CHRISTMAS INITIATIVE

We are supporting Rotary Paarl’s “Christmas Book Drive” with this event and kindly ask you to support the initiative by bringing your old books (or magazines) to the event. It does not matter if the books are aimed at adults or kids – Rotary will be able to distribute them in the area, including at the local farm schools. Look out for the collection boxes next to the registration tables. Alternatively, please chat to one of the Rotarians at the venue about sponsoring an “Edu-box” for a local school kid.

 

PEDDLER’S MARKET

Clear out your garage before the festive season: Do you have unused cycling ‘stuff’ just lying around at home? Bring it, together with a small table and your own chair and sell it at our “Peddler’s Market” at the Twilight Family MTB. We’ll set aside a section on the lawn near the finish area where you can sell or trade your unwanted cycling kit, spares and the like. Donations to our various development cycling initiatives will also be most welcome.

jesus christ but the registration process is terrible. The PPA website is the worst. Why have a census sized entry just for doing a fun event? I actually abandoned the registration. Site complained that my ID was invalid..

So much fun! Won a lovely R500 Canal Walk voucher in the fancy dress competition. New route was easy, however I do love going up the trails above Niel Joubert. Always a lovely ride to do.
