New Road Bike Advice - Merida Scultura 100

Hi Guys,

I am a neewbie when it comes to road bikes.

I am looking at buying a new road bike and see that the Merida Scultura 100 is on special at a few LBS.

The problem is the groupset that comes with the bike - Shimano Claris and Sora. I believe these are the bottom of the range groupsets from Shimano. I have been told that if you intend on racing, the minimum groupset required is the Shimano 105.

Will do the 94.7 and maybe one other road race a year, and will try and ride once a month at the Cradle.

Don't want to blow the bank but also would like a bike and groupset that is reliable. I am a size 56.

Is the Merida Scultura 100 a decent bike?

Is it possible to swap out the Shimano Claris/Sora for the Shimano 105 on this bike?

Thanks for your help

I don't think the 105 is minimum but bullet proof, do not write off the latest Tiagra and yes you will be able to change the Groupset but quite expensive, why not look at the classified section for some nice used bikes.

I just got a Merida Reacto 400. Nice bikes. My previous had a Claris groupset. I did 2 x Tour Durban's and an Amashova on it. It is definitely doable. That said, 11 speed is way better.

If you put an 11-31 cassette on that claris it is quite decent for anything from hills to keeping up on flats.
