I want to come to Namibia and Angola Later this year or early next year' date=' I basically want to go to Ongiva and to the bridge where you guys are working, and left across to the coast and down to Ruacana and back to Nam.

What are the requirements do we need a Visa for Angola and is it difficult to obtain, availability of petrol as we will be on Motorbikes.

Looking on Google it looks like the road from Ondangwa to the border is now Tarred (would prefer dirt roads)

Let me start by giving you the GPS co-ordinates of our house .... S17 03.587 E15 41.958, you are welcome to sleep over.

There are currently no service station in Ongiva. Two are being built at bot entrances to the town but I do not know when they will open. There are two service station at Xangongo but availability is always suspect. Fuel is available at Oshikango and there used to be a petrolstation at Ruacana 30 years ago and the GPS map shows a BP fuel station.

The road is tarred from Pretoria all the way through Botswana, Namibia up to Ondjiva. We are busy placing asphalt and should have finished the first 28Km by the end of this month and from there the process should be ongoing. The whole section to Xangongo and to Humbe should be asphalted by the end of the year. The road from Xangongo via Calueque to the Namibia border close to Ruacana is a sandy track and I hear is only passable in the dry season. I intend to explore this section soon as I am buying a small rubberduck and 8hp outboard to do some flyfishing on the Kunene. I have not been through there in 32 years and what I can remeber is that it is very swampy and I doubt if it will be passable in the rainy season. In Angola you tend to stay away from the "unused" gravel roads as the status of landmines is unknown. We explored the Kunene to the north of Xangongo yesterday. We discovered a farm with Mango's and vineyards with table grapes and orange groves!!!!!! A large wild fig just next to the Kunene and amazing fishing spots!!!! I cannot wait to go campissimo there!!!!!!!

Get yourself the tracks4africa GPS map. I downloaded the Namibia/Angola map from the internet at a cost of R130-00 Very well put out map and the Angola portion only includes the southern and western coastal region.

Visa I cannot tell you much as the company obtains them. It takes a week or two to obtain and is valid for one months from entry.. The border at Oshikango is the worst I have seen in Africa. Ensure that you have all the paperwork ready for your bike and expect to spend a long time at the borderpost. Also have munny ready for bribes. Be carefull of shysters and bullsh!tters as they will take your munny and run!!!!!

I have only crossed the border once but now that I have my workpermit I will cross to Namibia more frequently. As time progess I will keep contact with you regarding fuel and other issues.

Jus a question, why do this short little loop through Angola only????? Why not go for the full bash and go via Lubango to Namibe. You will see the amazing Leba Escarpment Mountain pass and dream of doing the route on your tandem one day. At Namibe you can camp on the coast, eat lekker fresh fish and experience the most northern extremes of the Namib desert.

I will let you know more info as the time comes closer.
