What bike for R8k - R11k?

Hi guys

I'm new to the forum and I'm here for a reason. I need your help.

I've been riding my current bike for 9 years and now I'm in the market for a new hardtail mountainbike. My budget is stretching out between R8k and R11k, obviously the closer to R8k the more comfortable my wallet feels.

I've been looking all over and have a few options at the moment:

- Giant Talon

- Giant XTC2

- Felt Q920

- Felt RXC2

- Hasa Race 9.0

Right now I'm leaning towards the Felt bikes, but I think it might be worth my while considering the Hasa, as it comes with a Reba SL, XT, and a few carbon bits for R10k with a lifetime warranty. I really can't find much about them online though :(

If it turns out to be a crap frame then I'll just transplant the bits onto a Yukon frame or maybe save up for a Santa Cruz Chameleon frame at a later stage.

I'll be doing quite a bit of riding on the bike, mostly commuting and recreational, but I do ride a lot of off-road and would like to get back into casual racing.

I've decided to buy this week because I've been looking for easily 6 months to a year now, and I heard a disturbing rumour from a retailer that the bike prices are going up anything from 10% to 25% on the 1st of June 2008. I don't know how true it is but I don't want to have to downgrade the bike because of the damn rand-dollar exchange!

Any and all suggestions are welcome.

What size are you?

I have one Scott speedster S1 allu frame carbon fork with ultegra which would be on the upper limit of the budget.

Well I'm relatively short, about 1.67m. I was measured up to fit a 16" frame.

But isn't that Scott a road bike? I'm looking for a mountainbike.

Giant Talon: Too expensive foir the kit on there.

Felt Q920: Comfortable, good value, good parts. Also consider Silverback Sierra, Merida TFS 800 or 900

Felt RXC2:  Fast, fairly light, reasonable value for money. Also consider Merida HFS

Don't know the Hasa. You might battle to sell that frame/bike come upgrade time.

Well a buddy of mine just went to have a look at Bruce Reynecke cycles in Pretoria, and the sales guys said they've ridden the Hasa titanium bikes and really liked the ride and the components are sounding better and better to me by the day.

As for the future of the bike, I've ridden my Yukon for 9 years and this bike will most likely end up with a 5 year+ service life under me, so I don't think resale is an issue right now.

My problem with the Felt bikes is that they're not easy to find on the sales floor at a bike shop, so I haven't had a chance to ride one.

Are you looking to buy a titanium bike? Yeah, Felt aren't the easiest to spot on the floor, but are great bikes.

Rather go for a Merida or Mongoose then. Proven bikes that are great value for money. Silverback might be an option, but I know they are low on stock.

No no, not looking for titanium, that's waaaay out of my price league!

What I was trying to say is that their titanium frames seem to be okay, so maybe the same goes for their aluminium ones?

Sometimes it works like. Take Titus for instance, but it's not a given. I would rather go with something better known that you know you'll get back-up and service.

And I don't mean go for a Raleigh or a Dunlop from Game, I mean Merida, Silverback, Giant, Mongoose or something like that.

While those don't look too bad, they're over my absolute limit.

I was looking as high as R11k because the Felt RXC2 has a recommended retail of R10 999...

I just remembered another brand that I'm looking at, http://www.stevensbikes.de/2008/index.php?lang=en_US

The S8 and the Stoke look appealing, but I've only seen the Wave so far (for R14k)

What about a Scott scale 50 or 40?

I haven't looked at the scotts lately. I bought a elite racing, from the previous range, for my girlfriend to ride n and it's a very nice bike!

Go and have a look on gumtree and see if you can find a connondale. I ride one and I promise you it's the best bike i've had!!!!!
