Sram Shifting

I got hold of Sram X9 Shifters and rear X9 derailleur 10spd. My current setup is X5 shifter with X7 rear derailleur also 10spd.

I fitted the X9 rear derailleur for now as I still need to either get new brakes or clamp conversion to fit the X9 shifter.

The problem now is that I can not shift into the very low gear. I will get to the 2nd last gear and just stay no matter what. All other shiftes are perfect up or down.

I have checked the tension of the cable even pulled it as tight as I can. Took the derailleur of and checked the movement by hand goes to max position easily. Set the limit screw to the minimum setting and still it does not even comes close to this limit. When I manually lift the chain to the lowest gear it stays in place no sign that the chain wants to go back to the 2nd lowest gear, even when "reversing" the chain it is still smooth, no indication that it is even slightly out of line.

I fiddled with the B screw and when turned in fully it finally shifts into the lowest gear but then the down shifting becomes a problem.

Can I assume that the X5 shifter is not compatible with X9 derailleur?

Do not have the issue with the mix of X5 and X7.

When you say very low gear, are you talking about the smallest cog at the back?  If so, the cable needs to be as loose as possible.  Take the cable off completely and set the RD using only the limit screws for that gear, then connect the cable again and set the cable tension for the other gears.

I think he meant low as in the biggest cog.

Reset limit screws, B-tension, and readjust the gears. Make very sure your hanger is straight.

Oh, I had a very similar, if not exactly the same problem.

Ended up taking the shifter apart and then planking my name a bit...

Turned out it was a bent hanger, and because of the way(mine at least was desinged) canle pull got messed up.

It is the lowest cog...most number of teeth - 36T.

@Kalahari limit screw does not have an influence does not reach the limiter. A bent hanger would mean that the smoothness will not be there??? As for adjusting...affects down shifting when adjusting at the shifter.

This would be my checklist:

Be 100% sure that the shifter is 10 sp (9 clicks)

As above check hanger alignment.

Check that you have the RD mounted properly ie that the stop is in the correct position on the hanger.

Check that the chain is long enough.

B limit can be a bit tricky.  Set so that when on the big big combo you have about 6 mm between chain and gear cog.  Check that it still shifts well on the big ring small cog.  Shift to small ring and check the extreme cogs and adjust if necessary.
