2018 challenges

time to look at the numbers...riding the bike has just been about getting the legs stronger and developing muscles (was told 3 years ago ...it would take about 3 years) ...should have put in a little more effort...but hey...i have never been one for athletics...got off the couch a fat slob who could barely tie my own shoe laces...so not going to loose any sleep over it.

from next week i start taking a more structured approach.

Tour Durban results

2016 - time - 3.44 - batch DL - avg speed - 28.08 km

2017 - 3.42 - CL - 28.32

2018 - 3.09 - CL - 31.75

Amashova

2015 - 4.25 - NL - 23.9

2016 - 3.46 - IL - 28.1

2017 - 3.36 - GL - 29.3

2017 was about enjoying my rides so little effort was put into improvement

2018 got off to a slow start due to work commitments...weight loss has just been about maintaining the current weight (being a sugar addict... it is not easy) ...if all goes according to plan...next week the real training starts.

why only next week...because i have had driving duties every morning and afternoon.

i heard a group of people talking yesterday...which diet works...they were all over weight..i mentioned that all diets work...you just have to take that step and start and stick to it for as long as possible ...as you loose weight then figue out how you are going to change your life style to keep it off...the majority of people who use diets to loose weight...put it back on and some...i talk from experience.

this morning my challenge starts.

spent 20 min stretching or should i say trying to...when you can only reach your knees...you know its going to be a slow.

just an easy pedal this morning in the sweat box without any sweat...tomorrow onto the punisher.

the biggest challenge for me is going to be to loose as much weight as possible without sacrificing muscle...i did read somewhere...it is better to load as much muscle in the first 3 months then drop the weight...all i know is the heavier i am on the 21/10/2018 ...the harder it is going to be for me to achieve my goal...no matter how much effort i put into the training.

back on the punisher (cadence watt bike) from today...first session hurt a little...but i am sure once i get back into the swing of things...it should get easier...if i dont loose loose weight from these sessions... then i am never gona loose weight...it might be a good idea to take a towel for the floor and the bike.

started the 30 day juice challenge...yesterday a mean green...today will see this afternoon...maybe a sunrise blend...will have to call it a sunset blend ;)

spending more time in the kitchen preparing my food...wife is enjoying the salads i make...i am enjoying the veggie snacks.

ever peeled a sweet potato and eaten it raw...cant believe i have never tried one...will certainly become an addition to my lunch box.

To me it sounds like you are really complicating things.

You can definitely achieve your goal IF you do two things and only these two things

  1. Do the two Cadence classes during the week and 1 or 2 long rides over the weekend
  2. You know exactly what you are doing wrong with your diet (8 slices of bread per day and a ton of sugar. Stop doing that, eat right.

Thats it

You are trying to fool yourself by getting very technical and worrying about muscle loss etc.

Do number 1 and 2 for just one month and you will see a huge difference.

escapee...i agree...if i am gong to achieve this goal i need to pay a lot of attention to what i eat ...on and off the bike... i dont take any food on the bike no matter how long the ride...and havent for a while now....i dont drink as much water as i have in the past (something i need to increase) doc recons it can cause health issues...kidneys..liver etc.

as i have identified my strengths and weaknesses with cycling...i now need to focus on my "diet"...i have started phasing out the bread and as much processed food and meat as possible...started juicing (veggies) and eat a lot more salads and veggie stir fries.

one of my big challenges...shopping...there is always something to snack on...hot chips...chocs at the till ...i can pat myself on the back today...2 trips to the shop this week and no snacks...the other is weekends...carrot muffins...lets see if i can resist this weekend.

no matter how strong i get...my weight is going to determine if i make it or not.

by the way i am back down to 100 kg on the dot...

You will see the two structured training rides (cadence) is going to make a huge difference to your cycling.

Definitely add some fuel to your longer rides over the weekend, this will also help that when you get home you dont want to eat the entire fridge + contents.

Its all about consistency

And if you cheat, and you will, just get back on the right track. Dont let it become a cheat day..

By end of June you can be a Beast...its all up to you

3 x 60 min sessions at cadence this week ...done...today was more about just getting use to the watt bike...playing with the settings and just spinning the legs.

cut out all fizzy drinks this week...even coke zero.

making it a habit to juice (veggies) at least once a day...i must say... beetroot has never been one of my favorites...now i dont have a problem throwing one in the juicer....eating (drinking) lots of carrots (not carrot muffins)...best part is munching on the veggies while preparing the juice...i will add a smoothie a day at some stage...i am keen to do a 7 day juicing reboot...i will  need to take a couple days off work...it will make me feel like crap for a few days.

went to see a fella about my knee issue...money well spent...it was a good place to start...checked body alignment...joint function and mobility...and then the came the muscle tests...3 years of cycling and no stretching no wonder i have issues...we went through a few critical stretching exercises which i have to do for a week...then back next week to check progress...you dont realize how tight the muscles get... until you are put through a few tests.

I just want to get to close to 2015's mileage. Gonna have to ramp things up.

2018 YTD 64hrs vs 2015 YTD 193hrs. Working for yourself in a challenging environment VS one less challenging.

some more useless information.

shova...estimated weighted power on strava

2015 - 209 watt at 120 kg

2016 - 180 watt at 110 kg

2017 - 194 watt at 100 kg

tour durban

2016 - 236 watt at 110 kg

2017 - 179 watt at 100 kg

2018 - 206 watt at 100 kg

cadence 2016

weight 110 kg

20 min avg 240 watt

2.1 w/kg

cadence 2018

weight 100 kg

20 min avg 250 watt

2.5 w/kg

the more i look at the numbers the more i realize how much harder it is going to be to achieve this goal...add in a bad group start...getting dropped off the back...wind...a mechanical...puncture etc.

it is not impossible...so i am going to at least try...and if i dont succeed i will try again...and keep trying until i do it :)

a message for people like (dont call me crazy) "prince vlad" ...the fact that you didnt achieve your goal doesnt make you a failure...why i am so disappointed is that you gave up...never give up...just keep trying.

if think back 3 years...sitting at Giba absolutely broken in agony from trying to haul my 130 kg fat a$$ up the green route...having people make nasty comments like " you should try another sport the kit doesnt suit your body shape" ...i just kept going.

from over 6 hours to complete a 100 km ride 2015...popping pills for a list of all the common fat boy issues...down to 3:36 to complete a 100 km in 2017...at 50 + ....37 kg lighter...if i can it...anyone can do it.

hi ...my name is Ian...i am a sugar addict.

unfortunately this is a reality...until i accept it for what it is...i am so screwed...it will prevent me from achieving my goal...the reality...if i cant drop the weight i am wasting my time training.

had such a good week...training...knee checked...started stretching...eating healthy...juiced... dropped 3 kg...managed to get in a nice easy 100 km ride on Saturday...then the F^&*& wheels fell off and some...excuses...excuses...excuses...boy did i make up for the lack of sugar during the week...chocolate cake...tart...chips...biscuits you name it i ate it...back to where i was last Monday :(

i have to pick myself up again today and face the reality... figue out a way to sort out the addiction.

i saw something really sad...the personal trainer who helped me loose weight a while back...has a proper beer boop...so it just goes to show...you might think only us fatties have a problem...this is the third person i have seen fall off the wagon...one of my mates...the guy who went to gym everyday (stopped a couple months ago and now has gut bigger than mine) and now my old personal trainer.

had a good 1 hour + session at cadence today...hopefully the 2 litres of sweat on the floor will show on the scale at the end of the week.

also spent an hour doing stretching and core training after cadence with someone who knows what he is doing...money well spent...i have decided to spend a little more with a few follow up session to get everything loosened up...even if it doesnt fix the knee...it will still be worth the time and effort.

a tip...if you are over 40...just started or been cycling for a while and dont stretch...go have everything checked...body alignment...flexibility...and get a good stretching program...you wont be sorry...well you will be for  while ... until you loosen up a bit...i should have done this a long time ago.

everything else is falling into place nicely...i just need to fix my sugar addiction...long term...a word of advise...never use sweets to help give up smoking...you will just end up with another addiction...if not worse than smoking...i dont know which is worse...being fat and having to take a hand full of pills or thin and maybe getting clogged lungs.

a good session this morning...we were warned it was going to be a hard one today...that saying...go till you throw...i almost lost my dinner this morning in the last set pushing to my absolute limit...and then I told that its time to increase my numbers by 10 watts.

talk about a mind game...today i got to the 3 rd session and my mind started telling me that my knee was paining...i was feeling dizzy...i wasnt going to make it... etc...after all 8 session i realised it wasnt that bad  :)

I am making a lot of changes...taking time out to...prepare food...eating healthy...lots of fruit and veggies...juicing...drinking lots of  water...stretching and doing core strengthening exercises.

busy uploading cadence sessions to selfloops and strava...i cant believe i am already 4 sessions in with 40 to go :)

this poor 52 year old abused body is in for shock of note.

been thinking...considering sugar is 8 times (according to info on the web) more addictive than cocaine...maybe i should i book myself into rehab...NOT.. that would mess up my goal...it has crossed my mind.

my strava profile for anyone interested in following my progress...check out the profile pic...at around 135 kg...my first beachfront ride.
