Somerset West/Stellenbosch rides

Hallo,

 

I moved down from JHB to Somerset West, and dying to ride in this awesome place MTB. 

 

Are there any groups, clubs people riding? During the day? Whenever?

 

Any help please.

 

Im a bit unfit, with the moving, work, packing etc, but im sure ill get my fitness up quick.

Hi you can join The Wannabees Club, just search online. Also Helderberg Trails, The Hanger Bike shop on the R44 is the where to go. Otherwise there are plenty of trails around, the best starting from the Paradise Kloof/Eden gate and you can ride Eden, G-spot, Mont Marie, Coetzenberg and elsewhere. Go to Specialized Cycles on the R44 halfway to Stellenbosch on the right, turn at the garage and then turn immediately right again with Spar on your right, they'll point out where these are. These trails are all free and open to the public. There is also a XC track called Southies in a park down Irene Rd. at the bottom on the right if you're coming from the R44 which is good for getting your fitness going and practicing some skills. Also Lourensford but quite restricted access.

What type of riding do you want to do?

 

Helderberg has trails. Proper gnarly lekker trails. Enquire at Hanger Bike Co at the R44.

Wannabees trails are great for getting miles in, mostly farm roads, double tracks and a bit of singletrack here and there. They used to have a lekker club vibe (probably still has, I'm not a member anymore) and do group rides regularly.

The Southeys Vines lap is a 3km loop aimed at beginners (ito technicality) but great for a quick blast before/after work or with the kids.

Lourensford trails can only be ridden with the Basin MTB club on weekends and Thursday arvies. Enquire at the Velo Life shop just below Lion's Square Spar.

Stay away from the Sir Lowrys Pass area.

 

Stellies has Jonkershoek, Bottelary, Simonsberg, Boschendal and the Banhoek Conservancy trails. Each with their own memberships and day pass systems.
