MTB Helmet Replacement Post Crash

I am pretty sure I know the answer but just wanted to double check before departing with some hard earned cash.

I took a bit of a spill (nothing major) over the weekend, lost the front end on some single track and went down. Right side of my head slammed into a tree. There was considerable impact - in fact I took out my phone and readied the emergency app in case I felt myself feeling faint/losing consciousness. All was good though and I ended up being able to cycle home.

Had a headache for most of the day and stiff neck for a day or two thereafter. Helmet shows no visible damage bar some minor scrapes and resin from the tree!

I am pretty sure that I would have ended up very poorly had I not been wearing a helmet and/or been wearing a cheap helmet - it's moments like these that you are grateful for the great workmanship on these helmets! I was wearing a Specialized Ambush, which is by no means massively expensive but a hell of a lot better than my last helmet.

I have done some online research and from what I can gather one should replace a helmet post a crash like this as the internal foam absorbs all the impact and essentially condenses - so one may not see the damage as it is "internal" but should I hit my head in the same area again there would no longer be any "cushioning' of the impact.

Am I understanding this correctly?

Also on the upside Spez does have the crash replacement warranty so guessing it is probably a no-brainer?

Thought as much - thanks. Was secretly hoping that it was simply a ploy to increase sales but it does make sense.

Guess it saves me washing those liners!
