MTB Help with new bike option

I'm 42 and started riding again , buying myself a hardtail Scott Aspect 940 after several years of taking a break . This was Oct 2017 . Unfortunately i had a minor lower back injury and had to go for a discectomy in Feb 2018 . The specialist and fisio recommended a Dual Suspension when riding again . I'm interested in the Silverback Sido 3 for myself and the Sola 3 for my wife . Can anyone recommend them and are there any other options to choose from that i'm missing . Your inputs please .

Silverbacks offer great value for money, cannot go wrong there. Also not aware of any reason why not. The Sola is a very durable bike, and very reliable, for the money they are kitted well.

 

Have a look at the Cannondale Rush, there are a couple of great specials on them at the moment and you can save a bit of money.

 

You might want to consider looking at a 120/130mm travel bike. Go and have a look at the Merida range.

Hi Thank you for the feedback , i'll take a look at the Cannondale , my only problem is nearby retailers , i'm in the Free state and have to travel about 160 km to the nearest bike shop . I'm 176 and about 86kg .

176 places you in a bit of a tough spot.... you are on the upper limit of a medium and lower limit of a large.

 

Having to deal with sciatic nerve damage after a hit and run years ago, I got to learn the painful way that it is better to be on a larger bike.

Jip , moving to the Large . My Scott's a Medium . What's your view on the benefits of the Dual Suspension in this case ? It feels a bit like a "overkill" changing at this moment ..

No ways! Once you have ridden a dual suspension you will never want to go back to a hardtail, even if you only ride the typical Freestate dirt road with coarse gravel and corrugations. BTW I am from Bothaville.

Also in my 40’s and just over 80kg’s, I’ve tried a hardtail as a ‘toy’.... unfortunately with damage to my sacroiliac joint and subsequent sciatic nerve the hardtail just did not work.

 

A well setup full suspension bike does make a difference, and I’ll recommended from own experience that you consider a 120mm travel bike over a 90mm/100mm XC machine. I currently ride a 120mm bike with 2.6 tires and it is super comfortable, not the full 2.8 or 3.0 of a real plusser, but real comfy.
