How does one determine the fork generation from the info available on the fork?

Serial numbers are pretty easy to read (easy thanks to guidance aplenty on the internet). For instance, if your model is as follows:

20 = week of manufacture

T = place of manufacture, in this case Taiwan (unconfirmed)

1 = year of manufacturer, 2011

I'm sure there's a similar method of decoding serial numbers for other brands and components. However, how do I determine the generation of the fork?
