The life of a custom wheel

As a wheel is ridden, period stress takes place . For a moment a section of the bottom of a wheel’s spokes become looser as your body weight is pressing downwards. This is specially bad when the wheel is under tensioned.

Of course this moves as you are riding. The power that you are exerting to the chain also affects a loose spoke wheel .

Doug Patterson is also a great wheel builder. His experience with wheels and spokes are great as the used to import DT and Pillar spokes and he has had a lot of experience with overseas teams

The secret to a good wheel is having even tensions . Loose spokes allow a hub to move slightly and the tightest spoke will snap . It takes a great deal of patience to get this right but it is done with sound , feel and a spoke tension meter .

wheel building is both an art and a science and cannot be rushed . Yes when you have built over 10000 wheels you get fast . But it’s the quality is that counts!

Over the years you built a few sets of wheels for me and did many repairs to factory built wheels.Never had any issues with any of them.

My son is still riding a set you built for me many years ago. Velocity Deep-V with Ultra hubs.

Anyone looking for wheels in PE area should give Rob a shout.

Agreed.

I have wheels that are over 10 years old and they haven't gone out of true at all.

Whatever Rob charges for wheelbuilding, I pay no arguments, because I know the experience, quality and knowledge that is behind it.

Rob pulled a new rim onto a wheel for me 3 weeks ago, I fitted a high pressure hybrid tyre on it and have smashed the wheel offroad in the meantime. Dead straight.

People upcountry would do well do even pay courier costs to get Rob to handle their wheelbuilding work for them...
