Road Pedals and Cleats

So i went for a bike fit a couple months ago, one of my concerns was the fact that i get numbness in my toes. This came down to the fact that my current shoes (LG MTB) are too narrow and cut off circulation. He suggested that i move to Road shoes and pedals, namely, Lake in the wide format. Now i'm keen on the change but i am in no position to pay 5K for shoes alone.

So what are my options other than Lake?

Anyone have any experience with other shoes that are nice and wide?

Then which pedals to look at considering cleat pricing and availability?

If i have to put a budget down id say R2500 for shoes and R1500 for pedals and cleats.

TIA

Are road shoes generally wider than MTB though? Not as far as I've been able to tell. Perhaps better just to seek out the widest and most comfortable shoes you can find and not worry about their intended discipline. No point in limiting your choices. Once you have the shoes you can worry about the required pedals.

road shoes don't have the restriction of side protection via scuff guards and raised rubber edges which makes the shoe less flexible around the forefoot.

My Giro Empire SLX is more roomy than my Empire VR90.

My Lakes feel the same as Lake compensate for the loss of flexibility in the upper, hence they're my go-to shoes now. MX or CX 237
