Audax 200km 5th Dec - Stellies - Yzerfontein - Stellies

Hey guys

Shew its been years since ive posted. But I suppose this is a nice one to say hi again.

Since this year has been so blah I have been dying to do events that havent happened.

I saw guys doing a Audax 200km the other day - and that sprung some interest into maybe doing one with a whole group of guys.

Its not a race - but just a really lekker day out on the saddle.

The organizer contacted me yesterday - there will be one happening on the 5th of december - instead of the 600km as listed on their website it will only be a 200km. (lockdown hours etc limiting hours)

http://audaxsa.co.za/

A audax is pretty simple - you start at a venue - follow a set route like you would a race - instead of having water tables you stop at control points (check points) to prove you did the route. They sign your control card. All of the control points are places where you can get food etc so you dont need to carry 5 bottles in your back pockets.

To make sure you are within cut of times - you need to try stick within 15-30km/h between the points. If you really want to race it then you can - but then have a coffee before they sign your checkin sheet.

No podiums at the end - its just a event to ride and finish and enjoy the day.

It is also super cheap - R150

If you are interested - only catch is you need to enter before sunday so that the organizer can process all of the entries before the morning.

Ill attach a word doc explaining everything and how to enter. You can enter through the website still - but then you are paying 200 bucks.

Post here if you are keen - maybe spread the word too.

Hope to see you there!

Warren

Audax 200 Stellenbosch – Yzerfontein – Stellenbosch 5th December 2020

https://www.plotaroute.com/route/1281259

Please read this if you are interested in doing this event.

This ride starts at Vrede Wines in Stellenbosch

https://www.google.com/maps/place/Vrede+Wines/@-33.8472308,18.8033803,16z/data=!4m12!1m6!3m5!1s0x1dcc534dbaffe7a7:0xcf149fe7caa14aa5!2sVrede+Wines!8m2!3d-33.8472657!4d18.8037261!3m4!1s0x0:0xcf149fe7caa14aa5!8m2!3d-33.8472657!4d18.8037255

The event starts at 5am. Gates will open from 4am. Try and be there by 4.30am to collect your entry.

There is secure parking on the farm. Left at T junction on farm. Ample parking around offices there.

An Audax event is an unsupported ride. This is not the same as a pedal power race where you have water tables and big groups. This is an event that you can ride alone or with a group of people that you ride the pre-planned route. Try and stay with people if you can for safety and support. You need to check-in at certain control points along the way. If you need food or water you may stop wherever you need to, however be mindful of the time restrictions so try and use your control point stops wisely.

There is also a website - http://audaxsa.co.za/

Don’t worry about the event being listed on the website as 600 – because of lockdown regulations they are keeping the official distance at 200 for this one. Payment and entry details are at the bottom of this document.

On the day, before you start the event you will be given this form below.

Keep this safe with you – maybe in a ziplock bag – The control points need to sign this.

Please ensure that your information is correct and you sign that you accept the rules.

Pay careful attention to the check-in times printed on the control sheet. Maintain an AVG speed between points of 15-30km/h to ensure this. If you have a hurricane tail wind that blows you there you may have to have coffee before checking in. If you are unsure how to pace this – your lap function on your GPS can be useful here. Press lap whenever the control card is signed. For accurate timing on your GPS device you can turn off the autopause.

The route is above in the link.

It has the following four control points.

  1. Total garage at melkbos next to the restaurant. https://www.google.co.za/maps/place/Total+Melkbos/@-33.7378419,18.4590396,15.5z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x2b9dd052bc60bed3!8m2!3d-33.735192!4d18.4563151?hl=en
  2. Westcoast Farmstall in Yzerfontein – on the corner of the R27 and Yzerfontein road. https://www.google.co.za/maps/place/West+Coast+Farm+Stall/@-33.3345228,18.2396825,17.54z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x1dccbab48cdfdb99:0x4475d15403dcae49!8m2!3d-33.3347323!4d18.2386217?hl=en
  3. Wimpy Malmesbury. https://www.google.co.za/maps/place/Wimpy/@-33.463541,18.7268563,17z/data=!4m8!1m2!2m1!1sWimpy+Malmesbury!3m4!1s0x0:0x7041d385bc068193!8m2!3d-33.4625001!4d18.7295001?hl=en
  4. Number 4 – very important a selfie outside the Vrede farm. Otherwise your strava will get less kudos ???? Please whatsapp this photo to Derek (the organiser) when you finish – He is not going to be at this event and he wants to see your face at the end gate.

If your phone is flat – another reason to be in a group and get your new friend to snap you and send it to Derek.

Please save Derek’s number – +27 83 305 7259

Get the farm name in the photo as below.

Remember to drop your completed sheets into the box at the end. They will show us where it is.

Some considerations for the event. This is a long day out on the bike. Enjoy it, it’s not a race to finish first. Carry food with you as well as water. It is important to eat regularly to complete this. Try and stick to real food as far as possible. Energy drinks wont leave you feeling great after 8 hours. Remember sunscreen and the weather is always unpredictable so a light jacket or vest would be prudent. Chamois cream can be a life saver to help prevent chafing. Don’t forget your spare tubes and tools. Don’t try and race through the beginning because you feel fresh. If you are unsure how to ride a longer distance rather hold back take it easy and save the legs for the last stretch. This is another good reason to be in a group. Some of the people would have done longer distance events and can help you how to pace yourself for this. If you have strict dietary requirements, consider using an empty camelback or similar sized bag for your food. Two water bottles will be needed as the last stretch could be very long and hot – especially if the SE blows hard that day. The stretch from Malmesbury can feel like a lifetime, another good reason to stay in the group ????

Because the website has the listing for the 600km event – it needs to go via hoops and Paris to get the details updated now. You may still enter there if you wish to spend the extra R50 but if you want the original price then you can EFT instead.
