Rear derailleur chain capacity

The total capacity of a rear derailleur is the length of chain slack the derailleur will be able to take up.
If the chain is on the largest chainring and the largest sprocket, it will be very taut.
Conversely if the chain is on the smallest chainring and the smallest sprocket, it will be very slack.
The rear derailleur must be capable of taking up this slack.

If I understand the Shimano post above, it is only bikes with triple chainrings that need long-cage deraillers.

 

 

 

You can also run a short-cage derailler with a triple ring if you don't use the bottom-four cogs at the back while in the small blade at the front.

Yup. Use a short cage only if you are running a single chainring such as for a downhill bike. For XC I would recommend a long cage.
