Would the cranks and BB off a road bike fit onto a MTB or are they something completely different?

Cranks will fit if you change the rings. The bigger rings might catch the chain stay. I'm talking previous gen Octalinks here.

get yourself a isis drive compact crankset and a BB with the proper MTB spacers and you wont have to worry about the spacings of the chainrngs it also gives you a wider gear ratio for the climbs and better gearing for downhills best bet would be to find and old american classic isis BB because the spacers come with it
