Is it possible to run a different cassette on your trainer?

I currently have a 1X11-36 on my road bike. Looking to purchase a direct drive trainer and will need to purchase a cassette as well. Is it possible to use an 11-32 cassette?

Any ramifications on doing this and will my existing chain be fine?

Only reason to do this is if I can’t find an 11-36 cassette.

If both are 11 speed, it will work

You won't have any problems. You'll even be able to put another speed cassette on there. Your only problem with that will be that the shifting won't be as smooth
