I think this may have been covered before but i couldn't find anything.

If you have a mtb crankset could you put a road chainring on it like a 52 tooth so you could get more gearing in a road race. would the deraulliers be able to handle it.MTBiker2008-07-15 06:46:17

look in the tech Q&A it should be about two pages back i replied to a post there on sunday and the derailer will handle it but just go look out it was very recent

Depends on the spider, if you have really old Deore cranks ,you will be able to use the new"compact Road rings 110pcd , however chances are you have  5 arm spider 94 pcd ,therefore the biggest ring available and very rare here in SA is a 46 . if you want to view a web ,look at Specialites TA ,beautiful rings ,you will have to order from someone like Settle cycles in the uk .Alternative sources are Stronglight, Middleburn (Beauties) and Vulta ,the latter pretty crappy(soft and  American).. You will spend as much as a complete new crank ,

If you have a 4 arm spider ,you may be able to get from the above sites  but very unlikely .Dont waste your time asking the local dealers ,who will probably stare at you as if you were an alien !!!

My advice buy a cheap road crank, with careful setting :you will have to raise the front changer anyway, it will work fine

Can't go any faster as i run out of gearing hence the want for a bigger chainring

Been discussed before and O_man got it nailedThumbs%20Up.  Also check if you chain stay gives you enough clearance for a bigger chainring.  Insure that you have 11 at the back and run nice thin slicks other wise just get a road bike or a racing hybrid if you don?t like a road bike?s cockpitLOL.<?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Play around with a gear calculator to see how much speed you actually gain for the money you planning on spending.

Another idea, not sure if it will work for you, is to buy a set of triple road cranks. I have this setup on MTB and road bike, and the spindles on the bottom brackets match.

Set up the MTB with the triple road cranks and as suggested earlier fit narrower slicks, amazing how much difference tyres make if you are using your MTB for road racing as well.

You will lose out slightly on the lower gears as the road cranks are not as small as the MTB cranks, but if you have the usual 11/32 rear cassette, this should'nt be too painfull on the off road hills.

My setup is

MTB 42/34/24 with 11/32 cassette

Road 52/39/30 with 11/28 cassette

Both 9spd cassettes.

Deralliers will need adjustment but should be OK
