I am dreaming of tracking the family roots (routes;-)).

I typically use ridewithgps which is superb, but I fear it may not always distinguish between public and private roads.
I have a rough route from Askham/Twee Rivieren to Matjiesfontein drawn. Does the hivemind here have any idea how we can ascertain if roads are crossing farms or private?

One way is to go onto Google Maps desktop version, choose the motorbike option and click on streetview -- all the blue roads that the Google car has been down should be public.

The smaller roads aren't shown here though.

By zooming in on smaller roads in Google Maps and going into streetview at each end (if available), you can typically see whether there's a gate or a sign indicating a private road. Alternatively, take note of guesthouses in the area and contact them to check.

Strava heatmap is usually what I use but be wary of races that go through some private land - so check segments on the route and you should see dates, times and rides through those areas.
