Jeez, glad you are alright. I mean dumb-ass 'cos that is a closed off area and I hope you realised how much more dangerous those slopes are than how they look. I honestly thought you were lying there with a snapped neck. Can't believe you do those and not the teeter totter. The totter is a piece of piss compared to what you wiped out on.

The teeter totter isn't that difficult to ride. Like everything in cycling, it's about momentum and balance. The thing that surprises people is the moment the planks hit the ground once you've 'crossed over'. Keep looking ahead to where you want to go (ie the grass on the other side) and shift your weight back a bit more than you think you should. The key is the momentum and staying relaxed. Don't brake! Don't tense up.

Go to a MTB race and see how badly it bottlenecks at the first sight of something technical? If that's the standard of the average MTBr in SA' date=' we shouldn't put teeter-totters on the Spruit, we should tar the fuggin trail.

It's shocking we should get a technical seeding system, if you cannot pass this technical skills your not allowed to do this race etc.

and how do you propose they rate this?

I know it can be frustrating, but it is pretty simple - if you want a clear run then race harder.  If you want to play on technical stuff, don't race.  I see lots of guys that expect the middle of the pack to give way because they are too slow or lazy to ride the first hill hard enough to get ahead of the crowds.

i heard a coupla bad things about karkloof this year, but was their idea of having two short and one long race on different courses the way to go?

Karkloof this year was sorted. Last year had one serious bottleneck.

Linnega, we don't all ride to race. We treat these rides as fun rides to ride areas we wouldn't normally ride on. The flip side is if you want to ride dirt roads fast and have to walk technical stuff, stick to the road. There are plenty of us guys who enjoy these rides but don't enjoy riding with that taste of lactic acid in our throats. We are not competitive and will quite gladly move out of someones way if they are flying past but appreciate the same courtesy when we are enjoying "riding" and not walking the technical stuff.

I'm definitely one of them at the moment.  But I understand that if I am held up by someone, they rode faster than me to start off with, so I'll wait for a way through and then go.  I pretty cautious on the technical stuff so I do hold some guys up, but I'll make way when possible, so I don't usually have complaints thrown my way.  I do see the same guys bitch and moan about others though.  My favourite comment was some fool who complained about the guy up front "why the f@$% does he keep passing me on the uphills when I just pass him on the downhills!".

Anyway, Karkloof can be a big problem with the long and short races merging on crappy singletrack near the end of the race.  The marathon guys are exhausted and most are complaining about the singletrack - usually means the slow guys in the short race get a good pasting if they don't give some track within milliseconds.
