Motorbikers by lion park

GIRR

Recommended Posts

Who has been riding in muldersdrift, kromdraai in Gauteng and noticed the growing numbers of motorbikers riding there on Sundays.

I'don't have anything against them riding there but it seems to have become their new race track to do 250km/h along and then miss you by an inch.  Over the last three weeks there seem to be more and more bikers with increasingly closer calls to getting hit.

I reckon the motor bike riders' website equivalent of The Hub would be more accurate pointing out the growing number of cyclists on 'their' routes in the Mulderdrift and Kromdraai areas. They've been riding those roads (obviously not the newly-tarred ones) for years  and years and years...

But you're right, GIRR, it's flippen heart stopping when they fly past you at speeds that really aren't very responsible.

bwahahahaha - just had a fight with a fellow biker about this - he was "dissappointed" that he had to ride slow along kromdraai on sunday cos of cyclists... so i pointed out that we (cyclists) chose that road as it has a lower speed limit and a lot of farming traffic and as such is safer for bicycles and bikes can go play on hekpoort and other higher-speed-limit roads... and yep, the attitude was not "yeah, the speed limit... you're right" but more "i'll complain if i want to" ignoring hte fact that he was moaning cos he couldn't break the law by speeding along there!!!

complaints are justified both ways though as follows:

- cyclists riding 2/3/4 abreast

- bikers / cagers (cars) driving at excessive speeds and cutting across the road and driving/riding too close

I know what you're saying but over the past three years of me riding there I haven't seen nearly these numbers of bikers.  I also wasn't exagerating when I said some ride at over 200km/h I think some cars driving there look at their dashes to check they aren't parked when they are passed.

I use the Kromdraai road past the Rhino Park on my way to and from Lanseria regularly. That road is perfect for cyclists but damn dangerous in a 4x4 if you do not stick to the speed limits.Wrong cambers and hidden bends.

I came around one and was faced with some idiots on a photo shoot in the frigging road monday last week.No signs zilch.Took me a while to settle down after that.

I can just imagine flying through there on a boney.

It should be said that a lot of the route has cycle lanes where it is perfectly safe to ride 2 abreast.

In the motor cyclists defence, a large group of hogs came through (going to Teak Place I think) on Saturday morning riding in a perfectly respectable manor, it was a pleasure sharing the road with them.

GIRR, you're spot on about the speed. let's leave it at that. and nope - anyone on a (motor) bike that wipes out along there at those speeds gets NO sympathy from me.

KF, mostly i ride my TCR there, but i have ridden the motorbikes there a couple of times... marshalling (CGC events) and escorting newbie bikers (so slower speeds) and once or twice on my way home from brekkies runs. that's why i think that it's plain dof to ride too fast - i know the road and the fact that there are lots of other road users along it.

Interestingly its not the guys riding their harleys or choppers enjoying a sunday ride that bug me.  Its the guys with their racing track bikes who need to prove they are speed machines.

markS - when i say 2/3/4 abreast i mean int he actual road, not on any demarcated cycling lane or yellow lane.

yipes, hogs behaving nicely??? and being a pleasure to share the road with??? musta been a bunch of zook boulevards, not hardley!

I can't say I've noticed this, even with the big groups from Club 100 and Cycle Lab. They (including support vehicles) keep safely to the side of the road.

Anyone can go fast in a straight line... There should be more open days at Swartkops and Kyalami for these guys to test their speed. That way, they're only putting their own lives in danger.

I have nothing against motor bikers, I just want them to ride responsibly on public roads.

I wonder if it would be possible to get police to speed trap there.  It would be worth their while just in bribes, I think many of the speeding violations could immediately take away your licence with the new demerit system.
