I am not one of those 'whites', but didn't we get into trouble a while back for fielding an older player in the Soccer World Cup for under 15's? Taking the moral high ground here is a bit hypocritical.

I agree with you Sean that the rules were probably broken and that should/would lead to disqualification if proven. the age limits in gymnastics were not set because of power / weight advantage that would the same as disqualifying Miguel Endurain for having above average long capacity' date=' it was purely based on athletes in the USSR / central asia being pushed to breaking point at a stupidly young age, backed with physiologic problems that might be prevelant if pushed that hard at such a young age. as for being arbitary, I stick to it, it has changed nothing, those athletes are still being pounded at the same rate from four, five years old, so if a rule doesn't change the problem you were aiming to solve, whats the point of the rule then....  arbitary. Nadia Comaneci, 14 years old, first ever to get perfect 10.... six times in one Olympics, should we rather give those medals to the silver medalist that was two years older......

It's simple, the rules state you have to be over 14.  If you are not, it's cheating.  Very simple.  Whether you think the rules are arbitrary or not is irrelevant, the fact is the other competitors are bound by the rules as well so that it makes it fair.

Cycling with big lungs is not cheating.  Slapping on a bit of testosterone cream is also not going to kill you, but it is cheating because the rules/laws state it and for that you get a two year ban (or life ban for a second offence.)

So the kids should be stripped of their medals. They cheated.  Nadia Comaneci did not cheat, because the rules did not apply then.  Simple

Unfortunately we are not just talking about mental and physical problems for these under aged athletes' date=' there are some pretty scary stories about selection from ultra young and possible genetic manipulation as well. <?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

It is well known that the East Germans, former Eastern Block, Chinese and North Korean types gave certain hormones to their athletes in the past, especially female, to prevent puberty, especially in gymnastics. Check it out.

Also there was an article on pezcyclingnews recently where some researchers were able to look at a bunch of these athletes from the former communist countries (first ever study) among the problems were deformities to their children, mental illness and something like 25% suicide rate.

I saw a local Dutch documentary on the Chinese gymnast selection and traininig of little 6 year old kids and you should see how they are 'trained'.  It is shocking.  They are made to do handstands against a wall and one kid has to count to 100 very, very slowly.  The kids cry, but can't show weakness an get shouted at and shaken around by the trainers if they struggle with an excercise.  When they get home, their parents or grandparents continue the pressure and the poor kid carries the expectations of his whole poor family.  Gymnastics is seen as a way out for poor families.

One chubby six year old boy was quized about his belly fat and told to stop eating so much.  Slapping, shaking and shouting seems to be the prefered method of training.  Very sad stuff.  In my opinion they might as well stop the whole gymnastics show because it is just pathetic.  A sport where you are over the hill at 18 is not a sport, it's abuse.

oh gosh.

please read carefully what I wrote, i never said they should be let of the hook, or that they were right, so jump of the high and mighty horse for a second. They should be stripped of their medal if found guilty. period.

my point was and still is, I believe it's a arbitary rule/ law, whatever you want to call it, to make a point you will understand, the only reason "big lungs" aren't elligle is because they haven't said so, cheating implies, deceiving others to obtain a advantage.

so cutting off your willy, that gives you a unfair advantage over other women, using steroids, ditto. having two underaged athletes, what advantage did that give? other than they were better athletes than any of the other options, and the point of the olympics is to ,,, wait,,, to reward the BEST ATHLETE.

So Willehond, just as the rule was changed from 14 to 16, it could be revised to 14, cheating and breaking the rules should always be punished, but don't just accept the status que like a good boy wothout question.

Yeah, one of the funniest things about Tiananmen Square was the government sent bills to many of the families of the students that were shot for the bullets used to kill them...

according to the medal table they are actually official losers.  Like the Americans say: Second place is first place looser!
