He is stuck with the rear shock. Can't change that to a fox unit on a LRS.

Fork

Wheels and lose the crappy tyres.

Although the Fox is a lovely fork it's a boat anchor.

While this is an interesting topic' date=' I have to ask myself if it's worth throwing that much cash into making this bike lighter? At 12kg it's not too bad for a FS, let's say you get lighter wheels and a lighter fork that would be how much? R10k? R15k? For how much of a saving? 1 kg? Not even? Would it not be easier (and cheaper) to spend a bit of time in the gym to get more strength in your legs?

Before you lot flame me, I'm not a weight weenie, my hard tail probably weighs 14kg! I'm just curious about the money spent vs the benefit.

For a sizeable percentage of bikers, it is about the bike. Ownership of the lastest gadgets or ligtest valve caps scores major coffee shop points.  However, since there is no pleasure in posession, only in desire, they move from owning this to that to the next thing. Chasing ownership of stuff.

I see the same in photography. People don't show you their latest photos, no they show you their latest camera, lens or flash.

When last did someone tell you about a great ride? Or share an interesting new route to a old destination with you?

In November I'm organising a ride along Route 62 in the Cape and one of the days takes us over the Montague pass. It happens to be gravel. You won't believe how many people don't want to take their precious bikes on a gravel road. It's a pity, they'll miss out on one of the great passes of yesteryear built before the days when bland civil engineering effectively flattened passes and eliminated the experience.

LOL, I remember taking to the gravel on the side of the road during Funride World Champs in 2007 and the guys in the bunch would have lynched me iof they could. How dare you ride a road bike on gravel...

If only they knew that many of the Giro d'Italia stages goes over gravel road.., Paris Roubaix, Het Vlanderen etc etc etc... :)
