Don't know if this has been raised before

I am looking at getting a bike for my 10 year old - what is a good option? He had a Makro special before, but looking for something slightly upmarket from that.

Are second hand bikes an option - have not seen them at the lbs

Depends on the price. I first got a Game special for my 8 year old (think a Dunlop), but he "outgrew" it quickly, not because of size, but of the need for a better MTB.

 

At the monent he has a Scott Voltage, and he loves it. Think you can get them for around 2K.

My 8 yr old also has a Scott Voltage... excellent bike..

The problem with a BMX for 8/10 year olds is that the gearing is a bit hard, so a geared bike for a small child is a bbetter.

flea, if the kid's not too tall, look at the giant mtx 250 (24"). plenty gears. my eldest is 10 and he's been riding his for 2 years already. otherwise go for a small adult mtb.

Agree with HR. My 10-year-old son (who is small for his age) has a Giant MTX 250, 24-inch. Rather pay a bit more for a bike like (I think about R2500) this than have to constantly repair a cheap hyperstore bike.

sean, that's about right on price, although i've heard the new stock prices are going to be a little bit different. should be arriving soon.

Cannot agree more HR, BBi and Sean. My son has Bmx bike for racing ( entry level ) and Scott 24inch MTB for riding. The difference that gears make up hill and down dale is remarkable..

Thanks for all the feedback - my son is about 1.5m - would that qualify him to step up to a small adult bike?

My friends 10 year old son got a Specialized Hotrock 24" bike for Xmas as he was struggling up hills.  He still has plenty room to grow on the bike.

Have a look at the bike, its really nice!

flea, at that height, i'd say the small adult bike's a better deal!
