thegoose Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 I hear a lot about the specialized brain shocks, but also a lot about Fox Pro pedal ...lets see what the poll shows... your views are welcome
BigGuy Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 Having ridden a Giant XTC for the past year, and recently adding an Anthem to the stable, makes for some interesting comparisons. I have the same front shock and wheels on both bikes. Both are made of aluminium. Both have Shimano XT groupset on, except for the XTC's Juicy 5's. Anthem has a Fox RP23 rear shock. I pump it to 220psi, because I am bigguy. I have been riding in propedal 3 position exclusively to get used to the rear suspention. I will try other propedal and open settings in the future, also sticking to a specific setting for a period of time regardless. My reasoning is to include as many different trails as possible from those that I have ridden in the past, to come to some sort of conclusion what will work best under what condition, for myself. When things get a little bit uneven and rough, the Anthem does not force you out of the saddle as the XTC does. Whether this is a good thing is debatable. I actually like getting out of the saddle, and personally believes that it is better training than just sitting down. Its what you do most during a race when coming out of a slow corner or fast twitchy singletrack. The Anthem will definitely make my LSD rides more productive, it is simply much more comfy when seated. Depending on the raceday surface, it will probably be a toss-up between the two as to which one will handle the course better.
Cranky Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 The Brain is not a shock. It's an inertial valve.Cranky2008-10-08 06:04:07
_BBi Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 Just lately, the Brain tech has not been given a good writeups in the UK MTB bike mags. It seems that the "normal" shock has evolved to the point where it can almost hide inherent frame problems. So, based on that and the added complexity / cost of the Brain tech, I do not think that it is worth the effort. This is just based on reading, personally I have not ridden a Brain Shock bike.
_BBi Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 ... The Anthem will definitely make my LSD rides more productive.... Hope you are not on drugs buddy.

BigGuy Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 Hope you are not on drugs buddy. Actually, I have tried various drugs, but find it too expensive. I have to use double dosages because of my size, my pusher did not understand when I explained the problem to him: It's not value for money. He recommended I take up cycling to lose weight. Anyway I have found that I spend more money on the bikes than I used to spend on drugs...BigGuy2008-10-08 07:16:57
