punctured on the morning ride today.... I see a lot of this happening lately - cant wait for the roads in JHB  to get washed clean by the first rains.

Anyway, got home and lined up the tube with the tyre, and it looks like a shard of glass went clean thru the tyre and tube. There is about a 3mm slash in the tread area... its not bulging open or showing the tube, so I am debating whether this warrants changing the tyre...?

Thoughts? I am aout halfway thru the tyre at this stage.

I dont think thats a problem. What you do need to do is patch the tyre from the inside as well. Try a thicker car tube patch.

You dont say if it is tread or side-wall. If it is side wall you might need to be abit more carefull.

Brian. I once rode on a tire that had about the same size gash in the tread area for quite a while before I eventually replaced it.

If a new tire is an affordable option, replace. If not, glue a piece of car tube inside the tire and put in some tireliners to reduce the chance of more punctures through that spot. Ride very carefully.

I found it quite scary when you have a puncture on the skinny road tyres. There is not much air in them in the first place but hell it can escape fast. Really scary when it happens at speed.

Throw caution to the wind and ride the darn thing. It's not a train smash. If the tyre's high pressure forces the tube out or the gash to bulge, put an unstretchable boot on the inside, something like one of the fancy Park Tool boots or sommer just a piece of milk bottle. Or, reduce your pressure to something sane, 90 PSI. Put that tyre on the back so that you can use it up quicker. If it makes schlopp, schlopp noises when you ride, get used to it.

I cannot answer that on the grounds that it may incriminate me?

Among other things, I tend to be high on life and whenever I can, get a good dose of adrenaline.

I find a good hard ride tends to get me high on endorphins as well.
