Can spokes be cut and rethreaded????

Recommended Posts

Ok so a normal tap and die will not work. I do not have the "normal" LBS here in southern Angola and have to do all maintenance on the MTB tandem myself. I do have a full set of spares and tools and though a leetle tap and die will do the thing for various legnths.

Thanx for the info.

This is a tap:

I can't see where on the spoke you'll use the tap. But like you say' date=' Boreman's opinion doesn't matter.

Look JB give the man a break he is comming over to the dark side for him.

He did however indicate a Tap and Die. Naturally the Die woyld be used on the spoke or not?????

These are Dies

Something for the great spoke debate.............

http://www.hozan.co.jp/cycle_e/catalog/new/C-701.htm

"Do you have too many spokes with different lengths?
If you use this tool' date=' you only have a couple of representative spoke lengths.
And can you make spokes of necessary lengths whenever you need them."

It's a Japanese product, so "Hozan" should be pronounced with suitable aggression and emphasis.

I have one of those. From time to time I have to build a wheel with spoke lenghts that are not available or, I just need a few spokes of a certain length.

The tool is so cumbersome to use that I won't attempt to thread spokes for an entire wheel with it. It has no stops and limits, so you end up with some threads longer than others and I hate sloppiness like that.

Otherwise, it works quite well. You need a different roller head for different spoke diameters. Luckily all the spokes I work with are 2mm. Someone here posted the other day that he works with plenty of 1.8mm spokes Hmmmmm.

The tool doesn't always save your bacon though. Since double-butted spokes are 1.8mm in the centre and 2mm at the ends, you cannot fabricate a short spoke from a too-long one or you end up in 1.8mm land.

The tool clamps in a vice and the half-wingnut device on the right lines the spoke up nicely. You have to provide the right amount of force for the roller head to engage with the spoke. Too much, and it is a mess. Too little and it simply doesn't engage. Finally, the rollers are a wear part and cost a packet. That's why I dont thread spokes for other people. A new spoke costs R9-00, a threaded one including labour and wear must cost many times that.

I suggest anyone with a batch of spokes to thread should have Cool Heat do it. They have a nice Phil Wood threader/cutter. It's a beaut.

Yes , that was me, which I purchase from Coolheat in the correct lenghts.

But apparently they are not available to the S.A. market.

Hendrik, you have just crossed the line from competitive banter to a public death threat. That is a very, very stupid thing to do. Perhaps you want to think about this and retract.

I wonder how many "slimjannies" and "Boremans" will see this in a serious light?

C'mon okes (JB and Big H) that's tongue in cheek. I'm also a slimjannie, I know, I'm pretty sure the only bullets I need to worry about aren'tfrom Oom H or even JB but from the flippin hooligans on the Spruit. Admit it, if you two okes sat down at a braai you'd be drinking beer and havin a jol.

Hell I would be.
