I enjoyed Attakwas. The toughest day ever was stage 4 in the first Epic, '04 to Swellendam. Mud all of 140 km. It all depends on conditions and the pace you want to ride at.

The 2009 Subaru Sabie Classic will have a new 100km distance with possibly 3000m of climbing as well as the regular 15' date='40 & 70km, tough? Bet yer ass![/quote']

Brilliant, Brett! Our marathons should all be at least 100km. You need to feel challenged from start to finish. The marathon world champs this year was 120km with almost 4000m climbing. We need some 100 mile (160km) road races too...

It all depends on what sort of tough. Michaelhouse Classic (Lidgeton Tuffy) and Giants Castle are tough cause of the rough terrain. Attakwas I haven't done but of the ones I have,

1. Rhodes

2. Magaliesburg

3. Koranna

I have to agree that day 4 of the first Epic was also a brute.

And your level of conditioning - physically and mentally!

I have heard the Trans Baviaans can be  tough apparently one year there was a lot of mud, haven't done it myself yet.  I agree Baberton's heat can be very uncomfortable.

Did Baviaans this year as well. Not really comparable. Baviaans has less ascent in 100 more km. It is an entirely different challenge, with team dinamix built in.

Atakwas was for me the ultimate test.

And why weren't you at the Crater Cruise to defend your title?

I picked up a virus 2 weeks ago and haven't been able to shake it. Sounds like it was a drama filled race and would've loved to be there to cast in my lot. Alas I will have to wait till next year. Maybe Melt and I can alternate...

what a monster having to carry the bikes throught the mud/clay of that f#@%ing valley. i was totally broke after that, then still had 80km left to do.

not sure how hard it is when its dry.

Sean I agree that our marathons are not tough enough. We need to have  "super marathon" races to up the level of mountain biking in this country. Perhaps have something like a 40, 70 and 120km distances at the drifter series races.
