  1. TDFN has valid a comment about being aware of the other problems that a wider Q factor may bring. That being said, Shimano have cranks like the XT (FC-M8130-1) which have a Q factor of 181mm. Depending on your current cranks, that may be a significant change. I also have a friend who has a custom pedal spacer of about 60mm for one side, so it can be done.
  2. My brother has a 2019 Trance and upgraded from the 30 to a 34 and has no problems. Just make sure that it's a boost (3 mm offset) ring.
  3. Stolen: Trek Superfly Pro 2012 When: 30 August 2020 Where: Johannesburg, Gauteng Bike was stolen out of a locked garage. Get further details about the incident in the Stolen Bikes section
  4. A terribly sad day for South Africa and for cycling! Some amazing posts going around on Facebook and Twitter just go to show what an impact he's had and how much he has done for the sport and others! A true champion who has changed cycling in our country. My thoughts and prayers go out to Cherise, Charls and the rest of the family.
  5. I managed to get spares when I was overseas and still have some. I'm up in Jhb so if you don't find anything drop me a mail.
  6. Well said and I agree with you but if we going to get our sport clean, one of the things we need to do is to be stricter so athletes learn that it's play fair or you can't play at all. I'm also not saying that the maximum penalty should always be used but I feel it should be available as an option.
  7. I agree that doping isn't a crime so it shouldn't be punished as one but personally I feel that the ban needs to be longer so these guys know that if they get caught they don't just sit out 2 years and come back which many have done. David is too old so he won't, but others have and will unless the rules are changed. Why give them a 2nd chance?
  8. Hi! I've got a MTB tandem and ride with my wife. It's great fun and allows us to cycle together which we'd battle to do if we were on separate bikes. It all depends on the reason why you want to do it and the trust how much the person on the back trusts you. I've got one of the R50 k bikes and love it but my brother has a cheaper one and has just as much fun. Again, it's the person on the back who suffers more if you go for a hardtail but you should be able to find a cheap one if you look around.
  9. There lots of ridiculous rules! The music one is true because it makes you less aware of your surroundings which is a safety concern. The mountain bikers used to be quite relaxed but on the road I've been fined for the wrong team kit, socks with branding, wearing leg warmers and having bar ends on my mountain bike which are also seen as dangerous in the event of a crash.
  10. For those youngsters looking for some inspiration, yes it is possible to race and win without taking drugs. Where there is money, there will always be cheats and DG is not the only one in South Africa. There are 2 things to remember, firstly that you should be involved in a sport because you love it, the second is what sense of achievement you will have if you decide to take drugs to win.
  11. In my opinion there are 2 things here. The first is that this is not your average cross country but a World Cup and therefore the technical sections need to be of such a standard that they test the skills of these riders so yes, a course like this will be challenging for the average rider but that's why they build in chicken runs. The second thing is that over the past 5 years marathons have taken over as the event of choice by the masses but cross country remains the focus of most professional riders and teams. The courses have become shorter and more technical and the duration of the races has also been reduced to increase the spectator value of the sport.
  12. IMO there's no need for 10 speed but becasuse Sram made it, Shimano has to follow. I think that for most people a triple crank makes sense because you have the extra gears if you need them even though it might not be very often and the weight penalty is small. In terms of the new 2 X 10 setups, the small ring goes as low as a 26 and with the new 10 speed casettes the largest cog can be a 26 so it is possible to still get the same ratio as you would've with a triple crank. Also the 2011 XTR will be 2 X 10 for those who haven't seen it yet so i'm sure that within a year XT and SLX will also have these options.
  13. I'm 1,87 and weigh 78 kg. When I was racing I was a kilo or 2 less but that's marginal. The biggest difference will be in the weight of the wheels. It's been estimated that loosing weight on the wheels, espcially the rim and tyre counts for twice as much weight as lost elsewhere hence the risk the top riders take by running non tubeless tyres. IMO weight lost anywhere else is pretty much the same.
  14. Burry's on the short side to be riding a 29er hence the downturned stem and funny look but you ride a 29er cause it's faster, not because it looks better. I think for most races in SA it's the way to go and they definately going to get more popular. Interesting to note that Tarmac's well speced bike comes in at just under 10 kg while Specialized have got Burry's to 8,5kg.
  15. Using your 220 - your age is only an estimate of what it should be. Everyone is different and some people are either lower or higher. The other thing to concider is how did you try to reach your max? You aren't going to reach it unless you are doing intervals which specifically push you to your threshold, usually a 2 minute max interval with a minute break followed by another 2 minute max interval although each person will have their own take on this.
