Garmin Edge 705

Hi Guys,

 

Just needs some advice... Someone told me that you need to buy the maps with the Edge 705? Apparently the map loaded does not have the street names on them?

 

Just want to make sure of all these facts before i make the purchase... As it is quite a pricey one.. .

 

And is the Edge 705 worth the price difference compared to the 305?

The Edge 705 should come loaded with Garmap's Africa Series Southern Africa Streetmap, March 2008 edition. This map set includes complete streetmaps for all of Southern Africa. Check with the shop that it does.

The Edge 705 costs R2300 more than the 305.

 

For that you get:

1.) Maps of all Southern Africa, worth R1000.

2.) Built mapping and navigation functions.

3.) Colour screen

4.) Ability to use microSD cards (only really a benefit when you load maps, so not really a deciding factor)

5.) Claimed 3hr more battery

6.) ANT+ compatability, allowing it to be used with a power metre etc.

 

If you're going to use the above features, the Edge 705 is worth it. If not it's just a cool bling toy.

Excuse the hi-jack, but...

 

If I were to buy a Garmin 705 from overseas (e.g. Dubai), do I then need to fork out an additional R1000 to buy the Garmin SA mapping DVD to upload over here?

 

In other words - do I need to add R1000 on to whatever the price is over there and then compare it to the local price before making the purchase?

You can also avoid paying some VAT, since you're allowed to bring in about R3000 worth of goods duty free in your personal luggage.
