so i'm in the market for new wheels and have been reading up a little

but what surprises me is that nobody seems to have or are selling shimano wheels. why is that?

mavics have been said not to be the best when it comes to durability

so what is wrong with the Shimano WHR560,561,600,601 wheelsets? or how do they compare?

also,

in the next few months i wanna buy a carbon bike. is there anything in the 15k range that is a good buy? the ones i've looked at by cyclelab all start at 20k

Nothing wrong with the Shimano wheels.  Well priced and reliable.  If you are looking for a carbon bike in the 15k range then have a look at Kiwi's Planet X bikes.  With a set of his bottom end wheels, you'll be paying nearly R16k with full 105 groupset.  Otherwise give TokenFreak a PM and look at his generic options.  You'll also pay about the same for a similar Silverback or Raleigh.

Otherwise get second hand.

There is a lot wrong with the Shimano WH-R600 wheels. They're rubbish and I'll qualify my statement.

1) The rims crack like crazy. Their durability is dubious. It's a combination of poor engineering, silly weight saving and anodising.

2) The spokes are expensive and designed to be different, not better.

3) The spoke line, which could so easily have been perfect, it poor. The spoke changes angle just as it enters the flange. Careful drilling could easily have eliminated it.

4) The left and right nipples are not interchangeable, which makes stockholding twice as hard and repairs difficult.

5) Shimano punted the dubious idea of putting the weight (nipples) in the centre of the hub where it requires less intertia to roll up to speed. This idea is stupid in itself since doing the match shows negligible advantage. However, they they went and added a big fat steel spoke head washer inside the rim at each spoke that weighs four times more than the nipple.

6) Very difficult to work on and true. The nipple at the hub means the mechanic has to make tiny little movements like a geisha girl walking in a very narrow skirt. Some of the spokes tighten clockwise and others tighten clockwise from a different vantage point. Confuses the hell out of me and slows the process.

These wheels were designed to be different. Different they are, but so is the hopelessly unstable Reliant car someone here uses as his avatar.

I would avoid those wheels in favour of the new generation Shimano with the nipple at the rim ala XT or XTR. Have they copied that concept on road? I don't know.

Although that is not a full carbon frame, that is value for money. I am sure TokenFreak has other options to interest you.
