Resistance mod on spinning bike. Advice needed

I want to modify this mech so that I can operate the resistance with a handlebar mounted 5 speed click shifter?....same as those used on "Hypermarket specials"

Has anyone done this mod before?

I cannot see this working without major mods. You are compressing the resistance here whereas the other ones work in tension and the resisitance on the flywheel is from the side.

did you put a speed sensor on the wheel??

I was thinking of doing a mod on the shaft and putting a spring in the square tube that will push the rod down and applying pressure on the "brake"

 

I don't really want to start drilling holes all over to mount new brackets etc.
