Youth Olympics 2010 - Are we pro-active???

In 2010, the Youth Olympics will be held in Singapore for boys and girls of ages 14-18. Only 2 cycling disciplines will feature, namely BMX and Cross-country mountain biking.

I really hope that our officials will catch a wake-up and start to organise a "squad system" soon, to identify the boys and girls that will be taking part. It will be a flop if we only select a team 1 month before the event. Boys and girls of 12yrs and older, need to be identified now, and assisted with training programs and gear.

A proper program and plan now, will ensure that we have many "Burry's" in the future.

We also need to motivate all young  "roadies" to try out mountain biking or bmx, if they would like to be part of this event.

The Vision

The vision of the Youth Olympic Games is to inspire young people

around the world to participate in sport and adopt and live by the

Olympic values. It was during its session in Guatemala in July 2007

that the IOC decided to create a nw sporting event to educate, engage

and influence young athletes inspiring them to play an active role in

their communities.

What are the YOG?

The Youth Olympic Games are a sporting event for young people,

balancing sport, education and culture. These Games work as a catalyst

in these fields throughout the Olympic Movement.

The YOG?s objectives are:

1. to bring together the world?s best young athletes and celebrate them

2. to offer a unique and powerful introduction to Olympism

3. to innovate in educating and debating Olympic values and challenges of society

4. to share and celebrate the cultures of the world in a festive atmosphere

5. to reach youth communities throughout the world to promote Olympic values

6. to raise sports awareness and participation among young people

7. to act as a platform for initiatives within the Olympic Movement

8. to be an event of the highest international sporting standard.

Who? What? When?

The Youth Olympic Games aim to bring together talented athletes ?

aged from 14 to 18 - from around the world to participate in high-level

competitions, but also, alongside the sports element of the event, to

run educational programmes on the Olympic values, the benefits of sport

for a healthy lifestyle, the social values sport can deliver and the

dangers of doping and of training to excess and/or of inactivity.

The first ever Summer Youth Olympic Games will bring together

approximately 3,200 athletes and 800 officials in 2010. The sports

programme will encompass all 26 sports on the programme of the 2012

Summer Games, with a limited number of disciplines and events. The

first Winter Olympic Youth Games will bring together around 1,000

athletes and 500 officials. The athletes will compete ? for the first

time in 2012 - in all seven Olympic Winter Sports. The YOG follow the

traditional cycle of four years, with Summer Games in 2010, 2014, 2018,

etc  and Winter Games in 2012, 2016, 2020, etc.

    GENEVA,

Nov. 1 (Xinhua) -- The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is

impressed by the advanced preparation for the first Youth Olympic Games

in Singapore, said an IOC member on Saturday.

    The IOC Coordination Commission of

the 1st Summer Youth Olympic Games just finished its first visit to

host Singapore on Saturday, according to the press release from the

IOC.

"We are impressed with how the

preparations have advanced. SYOGOC is very much on track," said Sergey

Bubka, Chairman of the Coordination Commission, at the end of the

visit.

"We can count on the full support

of the whole of Government and all Singaporeans, as well as on a highly

dynamic team committed to serving our vision for these Games,"

concluded SYOGOC Chairman and IOC Executive Board member Ser Miang NG.

    The Coordination Commission visited

various venues that will stage the 200 events in 26 sports. A master

plan proposal for the venues for the 1st Youth Olympic Games was put

forward by the Singaporean organizing committee for approval.

    The seven members of the

Coordination Commission were highly impressed by the Youth Olympic

Village based at the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) campus.

This site offers not only the capacity to host the 5,000 athletes and

team officials expected to participate in the Games, but also training

facilities for many sports and excellent facilities for the culture and

education program.

"We can return home with the

feeling that our partners in Singapore have well understood the mission

entrusted to them, and that they can cope with the considerable time

pressure," said Bubka. "We just have to keep up the same pace and

vigilance for the remaining 22 months until the opening of the

inaugural Youth Olympic Games."
