Hey Guys,

I'm heading down to Cape Town for a few weeks over Christmas (20th Dec to 4th Jan) and am packing the mtb in hope of kicking off the serious training for Epic.  Having never ridden in Cape Town I was hoping some people could impart their wisdom on places to ride?  Where to start from etc etc.  I'm staying pretty much in Tamberskloof and am looking for rides from 40km's 100km's.  If anyone has got any maps or directions on where to kick off from I would be very appreciative.

I'm also hitching the road bike on as I know that Chappies and all the rest must be a dream to ride on.  I assume there is quite a few bunch rides from various points?  Again, any help or info hubbers could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Brett

Hi brett, good times to come!! Weather is lovely here in CT and Table mountain offer some lovely tracks. I blieve the epic prologue is taking place at table mountain and surrounds, so you are at the right place at a perfect time.

There is so much to ride in the mountain and you dont really need a map. You should be able to find 40km of riding with 60-80% off road. I suggest you start in Tamboerskloof(around Raffikis bar) and go up all the way up to the Cable car building. Then continue with that road(cable way) all the way to the end. At that point you can either go down. from there on its an offroad fest... be prepared for a lot of climbing. You can go towards Roads memorial(clock wise) or signal hill(anti c/w).

I would not really recommend just these hard rides in the mountain for your epic training - because you tend to push yoursef quite a bit, its technical with some steep climbs, but you say you have your road bike to seems like you are sorted.

Guys that know the area and tracks well and can point you too some good track are the guys (Shane) at Bowmans Cycles bike shop in Cape Town (Bree street) they are about 500m down from Tamboerskloof.

Enjoy it - damn!

I have a great Epic training route. Tokai, up to silvermine, round noordhoek peak, back into tokai, up to the mast, down for some water, over and up to Constantia nek, into the forest and up the back of Table mountain. its only 80 or so kays but 3000m of climbing in 5-6 hours
