  1. While I appreciate the update, I don't really see any news, good or otherwise. In summary there was a meeting and Tokai remains closed
  2. imagine that on a 29'er
  3. I think that the second place run was even better, smoother, more controlled and that triple whip was ridiculous
  4. It would have been my 15th dash around the peninsula. But for R470 on roads that I ride every week and the irritation of a lottery system I think I have ridden my last Argus, one more entry to someone else. After experiencing the Two Oceans Ultra last year I am not unhappy with ditching the Argus.
  5. I have it on good authority from a "friend" who has been up there that there is an amazing amount of new growth, lots of it being grasses and bulb / tuber type plants and smaller fynbos type things sprouting. The big plants like the proteas and trees are for the most part dead, but some are regrowing from their bases. There is almost total ground cover in place, There is also no evidence of any significant rockfalls or erosion. Tokai is an exception due to logging but there is IMO no ecological reason why someone cant ride on a jeeptrack around silvermine, or run / walk on an established rocky path
  6. I dont see any reason why Silvermine cant be opened now, any rockfalls or landslides that could have happened would have by now.
  7. All the best to him, met him about 10 years ago at Hell and Back and had a bite to eat together, super cool guy
  8. I don't get your reference to a bad attitude and how do you draw the conclusion that he wants the riders to go his bidding. Anyone who isn't unhappy about the way the closure of the mountain has been handled is too far up SANParks' behind to see the light.
  9. Do you think they are going to be asking for a rates account at the door? just pitch up they cant kick you out
  10. And they missed out on a rear facing camera, silly nerds
  11. The irony is that the Two Oceans is now longer than the Argus, the runners are going to have bragging rights for sure this year.
  12. I think they should have just canned it, there is going to be chaos out there with guys sprinting the "full" distance, others reseeding themselves to ride with mates, others doing a slow ride for solidarity, two and three lappers etc...everyone that I speak to seems to have a different idea for Sunday. To cram 35 000 riders onto 47 km of road is a bad idea. I think the freeway is going to be a war zone with crashes. I wont be riding, rather go for a long run. I just wish that some of my entry fee could be transferred to the volunteer wildfire services
  13. This would have never happened if they didn't change the name of the Argus
  14. I have always wanted a sub three on the detour, horrible and harder route, but at least there is something to shoot for
  15. I think the concern is that Chappies may be destabilized due to the burning of vegetation and damage to catch nets and stuff. Ou Kaapse should have no such concerns but it wont be very pretty over there
  16. I am sure that this was done quite a few years ago. The ladies rode easy up hospital bend waited for the subvets to catch them and then rode the rest of the race with the boys. Will probably happen again
  17. Hopefully the dam temp stays where it is so there are no wetsuits allowed
  18. Lets see how many Discovery tops we start to see out there, peninsula marathon next weekend is the first big race where we are likely to see some uptake, then Argus a few weeks later then 2 Oceans. My guess is that there will be quite a few, the offer is quite attractive to the newbies who aren't club affiliated.
  19. This is a huge opportunity lost to Discovery, when the first marketing info came out it was full of fantastic promise, now that the selected races have been watered down. The first list had Ironman 70.3 and full Ironman, that promised a really decent potential saving on two damn expensive events, now they are out. I cant see that the offering is worth the hassle and I have to give up my existing club membership to advertise for discovery. This started off as a great partnership - we wear Discovery kit and advertise for them in return we save some cash on race entries. And Discovery and members benefit from being healthier. I run and cycle so thats R900 to register - then I have to write off my existing club membership and ASA licence, lets see if Disco can get their act together, for now its a no from me.
  20. I see that as a knee jerk response from motorists, little more. Of course there are the lawbreakers but for a motorist to say that they wont give cyclists respect until they are all law abiding is nonsense. Firstly motorists are legally bound to obey the rules of the road irrespective of whether other road users are law abiding or not. Just because one group breaks the law doesn't give the other the excuse to do the same. This is kind of the point I was making in my original post that motorists need to get over the indignation that arises when the see the following"- A cyclist wasting their time by being on the road - the cyclist has an inalienable right to be there, whether training, commuting or riding with his kidsA cyclist breaking the law, riding two abreast etc...A cyclist effectively blocking a lane when a road is too narrow to pass safelyI think that this is the fundamental difference between road users in SA and for example, Denmark, Holland and France. In these countries cyclists are part of the landscape - sure they may behave a little better most of the time, but there simply isn't the degree of animosity towards cyclists that there is in SA
  21. Only when there is an acceptance of cyclists as a part of the transport landscape will safety improve. At the moment cyclists are seen mainly as a nuisance and an obstruction to traffic. Only when motorists see cyclists as a simple fact of life, like a traffic light, speedbump or other part of the system that requires a change in driving behaviour, like slowing down etc... will safety improve. At the moment most motorists view cyclists as objects which are out of place and in their environment and thus not deserving of any consideration or respect.
  22. Di2 does have wireless capability
  23. I don't know if its a fad, but it is certainly a very small niche that I don't see making a very big imprint.
  24. HotChillee for spots one and two on the podium, I will be disappointed with anything else
