I didnt think so but went for a ride (new cassette, middle chainring with old chain) and it was making a horrible grinding noise. Just put a new chain on and its running much smoother although this is in the workstand so the torque is not quite like riding.

hey dirtbreath, that hub name conjures up all sorts of things !

 

i disagree, certainly no pro about bike mechanics but it makes sence for all new components to wear in evenally together. I would think an old chain would definetly have adverse effects on a new cassette & chainrings. Personnally if i was buying good quality components i would spend the extra buck & keep the old chain for emegencies.

Yup. The new chain has made the world of difference. I have kept the old one as a spare as you've suggested.
