Powertap Ant+Sport and Garmin 705

Okay, so I finally got the update to make my wireless powertap 2.4 Ant+Sport compatible.

 

 

 

Updated the hub no problem, then got the Garmin 705 paired with the power meter.

 

 

 

There are a couple of gotcha's.

 

 

 

1. You must change the 'Bike Profile' in the Garmin to tell it that you have a powermeter, it's no use just trying to scan for a power meter in the Ant+Sport menu.

 

2. You can no longer zero the torque while you are coasting, you need to be stopped.

 

 

 

The power data is slightly smoothed by the Garmin, causing it to under-read normalised power by a few percent. Garmin are looking in to this issue and hopefully will update the firmware.

 

 

 

The speed data is very spiky, see included pic.

 

 

 

 

Lastly, I had a problem applying the firmware update to the PowerTap CPU to make it work with the updated hub. Have finally resolved it, it was a java library version problem, so I had to do a little bit of hacking (hell I miss my programming days!).

The dongles are now available. I want to test properly to make sure I know exactly what happens with all the combinations of speed/cadence sensors etc.

Try Sportracks, the best program for your Garmin 705, Polar ect.

It is open source and there is 47 plugins.

I've also successfully paired the Garmin 705 with my PT MTB disc hub and it works a treat.

 

Problem is that I can't seem to get the 705 to downlaod to WKO+. I keep on getting an 'unrecognised device' type error. There is no separate 705 option in the drop down menu and I have just been selecting the 'Edge 305' option.

 

Bruce, or anyone else, is this a know issue?
