I understand it as where the clamp is. Some clamps you can see above the pivot point and others are below. My frame can only take bottom swing but it can be fitted to both a top and bottom pull frame.

Depends on your cable routing. If it runs along the top tube and down the seat tube you need top swing. Under the bottom bracket you need conventional.
Yup! ...and the method of engagement...you can get them as follows:

 

Top pull bottom swing

Top pull top swing

Bottom pull bottom swing and

a bottom pull top swing

 

The pull part relates to where the cable engages from and the swing part relates to where the derailleur sits in comparison to the clamp!!

Had bottom swing on my hardtail, bought a top swing by default, it works perfectly but the bottom swing looks better...less visible on the frame, hidden behind the chainrings.
