Can anyone tell me if i can fit m960(hollowtech) small chainring to the newer m970 crancks.

I understand that the middle and large one looks different because of the spider, but the small one looks kinda the same ?

any mechanics out there ?

The mechanics reading this forum are confused by your confusing use of the Shimano trade name Hollowtech. It has nothing to do with the hollow BB axles found on modern 2-piece cranks.

To know which Shimano models are compatible with what you need to work in a bike shop and deal with these things every day. The rest of us just try it and see if it works. *

If it works, it works.

*I secretly believe most mechanics dont have the knowledge either and follow the same strategy.

I used an xt chain ring on my icon crank. Two totally different brands.

Like JB says - look and see if it fits.

all that needs to line up is the holes.

Unfortunately not. There's something else that needs to be the same other than the holes and that' the ring's offset.

Many Shimano rings are made so that the tip of the teeth are not directly over the mounting tabs of the rings. They're offset to the right or left. In other words, the rings are not perfectly flat plates but are slightly "dished".

Should you thus mount an incompatible (offset-wise) ring on a spider that does match the holes, the said ring will not have the right distance from its adjacent rings and a chain cannot fit in there.
