Shimano Freehub question

Can you fit a 10 speed cassette to a Shimano 8/9 freehub body. I want to purchase a Shimano XT Wide Flange Tandem hub and it has a 8/9 speed freehub that takes the Hyperglide cassette. Can I later fit a 10 speed cassette to this ??????

If it is an 8 spd body you will be able to fit a 9 spd cassette. Similarily you can fit a 10 spd cassette on a 9 spd body, but you can't fit a 10 spd cassette on an 8 spd body.

Speed devil sorry to break this to you but i am curently riding an 8 speed dura ace hub on the rear and have no issues riding with a ten speed cassette all you need are two spacers on the freehub before the cassette

Sorry Turtlek

That is what I was told by my LBS. I also had an 8spd a few years ago which I upgraded to 9spd. When I went 10spd my LBS said I had to change bodies.

In the end I just bought new wheelsBig%20smile, so I never really did the whole 8 to 9 to10spd conversion.

It just goes to show how unscrupulous the LBS' are. They would rather sell a new body instead of a spacerDead

I ordered my Tandem wheelset I based this question on from St John Cycles in England. The Hubs are Shimano XT Tandem 40 hole hubs with Sun Ringle Rhyno rims. Not the lightest wheelset available but fairly bombproof. One day later in the far and distant future we will upgrade the tandem to 10 speed, same as his Raleigh T6000 brother in RSA.
