A rough guide to complaining on the Hub

With a few minutes to burn I thought I'd type up a quick guide to reporting a post, and why some get attention, and some don't.

First things first, read the rules. They're freely available on The Hub, and Admin makes sure all users have access to this. It's simple...The Hub is a free service, run by Admin. Advertisers pay for advertising space, and thus funds this project. I know some of the numbers, and it's barely enough to pay for hosting and bandwidth. The man doesn't make a lot of money from it. So, read the rules, see if the post that you're complaining about violates the rules.

Examples that will get attention:

- Swearing...seriously. If you live in Brakpan or Bishopscourt, I don't care. Don't swear, it's not becoming good manners

- Porn...yes, a touchy topic Admin has discussed before, and some people still think the only difference between art and porn in 3inches. It's not. We have kids reading these forums.

- Religious discussions. Last time I had a look we were in a democratic country, and thus we're all allowed our own beliefs. In this light, respect the other persons views and don't attack them. Moderators won't be impressed.

Report! That little button and the bottom, and how to use it. Now you've seen this particularly offending post, there is barely a nipple showing, or someone has offended you deeply by showing their tongue as a diving knife. To the 'Report!" button. Hold up, easy there tiger. Let's go read the rules.. Aaah, no porn, no swearing etc. But you're offended..maybe sit back and relax for 5 seconds? Think twice about reporting it, and see it for what it is. If you're still highly offended, hit that "Report!" button!

I've reported it, but nothing has happened!! Now what?? I demand the TRC! Easy there tiger, there are at last count, 4 moderators and 1 Admin. You hit that report button, the magic interwebz sends us a e-mail stating "Stirring Frikkie" has reported a post, and gives us the URL. Now heaven forbid, the moderators have real day jobs as well, and sometimes, just sometimes are busy and cannot attend to those fortunate enough to 'Hub' all day's whims and complaints. Maybe you're lucky and a moderator has a free moment. To the Hub, let's see what's happening! In this case, one of the 4 (or sometimes Admin) will look at the particular post, and exercise some common sense, and take appropriate action. Let's say it's a post claiming that Cervelo bikes are weak and break, and CerveloFan101 has taken offense. Seriously, you just wasted a moderators time. Sometimes it's an exciting post and there's nipple showing. Then the moderator will hit a little 'Hide' button and the post is hidden from the general community..Problem solved!

Every once a while, something really goes wrong, and someone insults someone else, or someone takes his shoes off and everything goes pear shaped. Hrrm, how to handle this. Consult your fellow moderator? In this case I will move the post, or ask the other moderators for their opinion in our private section. If I don't see them on (and vica versa), they might do something, and post on the moderator section why they did it. Fun hey? No not really...

Moderators are evil! This is worse than fascism! Oh, sometimes the moderators are helpfull, like resetting passwords, cleaning up forums where topics are in the wrong places, and assisting people uploading new avatars and pictures. The moderators are also cycling lovers and generally a nice bunch. Respect us, we'll respect you, and the Hub is all sunshine and roses.

Hope this helps and clears up some questions Wink
