If in falling you dont damage the helmet, how long can you keep it and assume its safe and there has been no degredation in the materials? A helmet I wanted to get the mrs said replace after 2 yrs ?? Is 2 years a fair lifetime for a helmet ?

willy Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 I'm sure it depend how you look after it. If it's throw in a corner after every ride the life span is shortened. My last Met went 5 years before I destroyed it in my crash last year. The helmet did it's job.

Once cracked it is of no use other than to avoid being told off by the helmet police, the real police or the race police (organisers etc).
Anthony Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 the foam does degrade over time, especially if you leave it lying around in the sun... my helmet is about 3 years old. it looks like it can still do its job but on close inspection there are hairline cracks forming in the foam
Mrs Pickled Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 According to Himself (husband) 5 years is a good lifespan-provided you take good care of it. But as the others have said, if you throw it around, leave it in the sun and generally abuse it, you shorten the lifespan significantly. One of our mates has had his skid lid (helmet) for 4 years and there are hectic cracks in the foam- never been crashed, just treated badly. Remember that each case is unique,so this is just a guideline ....
