  1. We were at Dunkeld yesterday morning to watch the Tour come past. 99% of the shoppers in the centre were unaware of the event, the rolling road closures or what the noise and choas were about. Many asked why there was no publicity or aweareness generated like the organisers of 94.7 do. The mororists were simply downright rude, impatient and ill mannered- shouting at the marshalls, hooting, swearing and generally unacommodating. What scared me was the reckless way they just disregareded any attempts by these officials to try to control traffic and keep EVERYONE safe. The hostility, aggression and lack or tolerance really shocked me. Its a huge pity that what could have been a really awesome day out with people cheering on a new event had to turn into this nasty, nasty business.
  2. Try find your local Bouticycle or Intersport and ask for a Velo (road bike) or a VTT (pronounced Veh Teh Teh= Velo Tout Terrain) which is a mountain bike. The Intersport will be cheaper, but when we were over a while ago the guys at the Bouticycles (we visited a few) were super friendly and helpful. Tell them you are from Afrique du Sud and you'll be fine Have a blast dude!
  3. Hi Everyone I'm on the lookout for part-time/ 3 days a week position in Jhb. I do volunteer work 2 days per week and need to fill the other days- I have a cycling habit to feed! I have sales and marketing experience as well as training/facilitating experience. Will also look at office admin/co-ordinator positions. My new motto is "Anything LEGAL for cash" CV available on request, please PM me. Thanks
  4. Thanks Slowbee, tried to do a search before posting here but will check again....

  6. teh_runnah, you have saved this noob from certain disaster due to inexperience, thank you o great one! Now where does one secure a clutch of these premium grade Bad Pies everyone keeps (ahem) gushing about??
  7. Ok, now I get it! So everyone consumes artificial sweetners (using their preferred ingestion method) and chows bad pies in their attempts to out-pedal (or outrun) the otters whilst fleeing from the hijackers. Have I got it right??
  8. Yip! That would be them, real eye candy! Later on we were both singing the praises of our "twisties" (aka grip shifts) and trying to coerce others into changing too- good times!
  9. I remember the banter at the Nashua Ladies' MTB day- Mark and two other "girls" (in minis!) were stashing Windhoeks in their camelbaks for the ride- plenty laughs at that! I didn't know him well, but I remember him as a friendly guy, full of chirps. My sympathies to the Stockton family.
  10. Welcome NewBikeGirl! I learnt to ride a bicycle for the first time EVER 3 years ago and have not looked back I'm still very wobbly on my MTB and salute you for even daring to play on the tar, well done to you! If you want a secure environment to pedal off road, try the Bike Park off Main Road in Bryanston. There are several trails to hone your skills on and its a good place for a girl to ride. As a fellow "noob" my suggestion is to persevere, enjoy the pedalling and GET GOOD SHORTS!! We live in the North so sadly cant join you for your weekday adventures but hope to see you on the rails- I'll be the one with the training wheels
  11. My personal favourite was the "Foo-foo -zay-lar" that featured in this year's TDF. Many happy hours of giggling from that comment!
  12. Not only cycling- think about the fashion industry, cars (how many people upgrade to the "new shape" when they currently drive a perfectly acceptable "old shape" vehicle??) It'll bankrupt you IF YOU LET IT. IMHO
  13. I've noticed more people getting into the SWC vibe recently- maybe more people have realised that regardless of their personal sentiment, the event is still going ahead so if you cant beat them, join them. Personally I'm not a big soccer fan, but I hope that those that are have a good, safe event and that I can still get a seat at my favourite coffee shop after a pedal during the 2 months
  14. MY 5c for what its worth. I lost 12kg when I was on the Weight Watchers programme- and have kept it off for 3 years. The principle is simple. No powders, scales, weird teas, moon dancing (unelss that's your preferred exercise! ) fasting or other mumbo jumbo. Just good old fashioned moderation (a little bit of everything- even chocolate is ok!) sufficient hydration, sleep and exercise and you'll be on the road to success. All the best with the Comrades!
