Family Cycling Around Wilderness/Kynsna- Trailers?

Coming over to the Western Cape at the weekend for a couple of weeks escape from Britain's rain and cold.

My road bike's coming over for the Argus, but the week before we're staying in Wilderness ('We' being myself, my wife and 16 month old son).

In the UK we love spending time on the mountain bikes in the Lake District, with Ollie in his Burley trailer.  We'd love to do something similar on our holiday.  Are there any good trails in the area with bike and trailer hire?

Staying in Wilderness you are going to find that there are quite vast selections of trails to choose from?to name a few: <?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

To Knysna?s side you will find the stunning Hakerville (single track and jeep track). Get into contact with the Bike shop in Plett (044 533 1111) or Knysna Cycle Works (044 382 5153)

Between Wilderness and Knysna you will also find the 7 passes (not single track, just dirt road)?this is more challenging but stunning views.

Over on George?s side you will find lovely single track along the George Dam with additional jeep track routes. You can also opt for the nice jeep track along the mountains.

In Wilderness itself, you can stick to the dirt road along the lakes; it?s a very easy and relaxing ride.

Bike Hire you will find at Cycle and Sport Centre in George (044 873 2982) they will also get you in contact with the local MTB club for a trailer or bike rack. I am sure they will be more than willing to help you choose a trail that is right for you. Additionally you can contact Ride Life in George at 044 873 5258.

Enjoy the ride!

Tip from an ex-South Cape person (lived in George for a few years)... Find a trail and ride!! There are so many to play around. I was into hiking then and found that just above George, hidden in the mountains are 5 stunning dams that you dont notice until you stumble upon them. Also... road bike must do: outeniqua pass; mtb must do: montagu pass. I regret not riding those 2 and am planning 2 holidays - 1 road and one mtb!

Thanks for all the advice guys. Big%20smile

The trails in the area certainly sound amazing.  Hopefully we'll be able to hire a Child trailer somewhere so we can get a taster.  Don't know if we'll be managing the tougher routes though, as the 'Little Man' has got heavier towing the trailer is like having an anchor!  In the UK I singlespeed with the trailer.  It's getting to the stage where I might have to think about gears!

I'm lucky enough to be 40 minutes from the Peak District.  Used to be on my doorstep.  You're right; there's so much fantastic riding in the Peaks.  I'm guessing the trails in South Africa are easier on transmission.  Wet gritstone mud it the Peaks plays havoc on chains and cassettes.  Unfortunately last summer was so wet in the UK it was muddy most of the year!

Trust me, I regret not discovering cycling when down there. okay, I did ride a bit - like the old road from saasveld to map of africa (AMAZING) but nothing hectic. My friends are bugging me again to visit but thanks to all my cycling holidays Embarrassed and my 2 bush trips I cant find time!!  CryCryCryCryCry Maybe next year I take a week and drive down with BOTH bikes. Yep, I am suddenly homesick now.

Coat, bike, leave ......... ah rats! bike at home and I am stuck at work! Ouch
