Whats the deal with the Avids

i have Avid 3.5's

the front keeps making a hell of a lot of noise.

i cleaned it, with cleangreen, it still shouts.

i replaced the pads, it still shouts

i sanded the G4 rotors, it still shouts..

am i missing something here?

have you bedded them properly? Never touch the rotors or pads with your fingers. I use benzine to clean mine if I accidentally touched it.

i even used abusive language towards it in the Argus

Doesnt work..

Seems like the behavioural problems may stem from something deeper then.

As far as I understand, noise comes from vibration. Get rid of the vibration, get rid of the noise. Are the rotors true? Are all the bolts secure? How about the hub bearings? Are the brake pads installed correctly? Is there any movement anywhere that seems out of the ordinary when the brakes are engaged?

I have the same problem. I have tried it all too, different pads, aligning them properly etc. My old Deore calipers were silent. My Avid Carbons scream blue murder when they get wet. When they are dry it's less, but the still make a racket. It's one of the Avid Juicy things I guess. Any tricks would be most welcome. It drives me nuts some times. They just brake so well that I can't bear to get rid of them.

Firstly dont use clean green, use isophrophyl alcohol, second sounds like you've glazed your brake pads(which need a light sanding then...water paper), third clean brakes squeal, the less you clean them the quiter they are and the better they work.

I don't think so. My 3s did not make a sound. I used metal pads and it still had half the pads left after 3000km when I sold it.

The sound does not originate in the disc but in the pad. Softer pads will have a greater tendency to squeal. Discs are essentially all the same, made from stainless steel plate and their size, shape and cut-outs have very little to do with the way they resonate. Look for the problem with the pads, change pads, try sintered metal etc.

well I've been running the G4 rotors, then switched to an Alligator up front and the only diffs it made was it screamed with a different note! So now when I brake they play a lovely chord!!!

I'm running the metal sintered pads as well. They make no diffs.
