a cape hubber asked me to post this. apologies if it's been done before:

The Pedal Power Association invites all cyclists to participate in a short ride on Saturday 7 March 2009 at 13h00 in memory of all cyclists who died nationally during the past year as the result of car accidents.

Riders are invited to meet PPA Vice-Chairman Elton Davids at cnr Oswald Pirow and Sir Lowry Roads (on the sidewalk at the foot of the bridge) in front of the Good Hope Centre. From there the procession will go down to Adderley Street and along to the Civic Centre, where wreaths will be laid at the Cycle Tour start.

The ride is only a few km's long and it is envisaged that it will take less than an hour to complete.

Please wear a black armband or a pair of black socks. Helmets are compulsory. Please obey ALL traffic regulations and ride in SINGLE FILE.

"It is indeed sad that we are placing the wreaths at the start point of the Cycle Tour which was started so many years ago as a protest for more rights, respect and better facilities for cyclists," said PPA Chairman, Steve Hayward.

"However, it is gratifying that after so many years, the City is slowly heeding this call and we see the start this year of what we hope will be many dedicated cycling routes and facilities for cyclists.  Our sincere wish is that we shall not have to stand here again next year and hope that we, in partnership with all forms of government, can educate the public of the rights of cyclists."

As a further indication to show that they are thinking of all cyclists who died during the past year, Cycle Tour participants are requested to wear black socks on Sunday while doing the Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour.
