SPD's RULE......been riding them for a while and no problem. Must say I havent had egg beaters so cant rate them either.

I started riding with SPD's, Changed to Candy's for a VERY short while and went back to my trusty 520's

I actually do use eggbeaters,(the R499 ones) & I use them with Shimano AM45 shoes

which dont have the stiffest sole. They work perfectly for me, although

clipping in was a mission in the beginning cause the shoes dont have the

knoppies on the side to guide your foot on to the pedal.

@Anine, Yup, it has 3 settings. This is my 2nd pair this year after I smashed one on a rock .

They are awesome. I love the extra 2 degrees of float, and that I can pedal even if I dont get clipped in first time.

Oh, and mud.... what mud?

Eggbeaters hurt my knees - no tension adjustment.

SPD Hurt my knees - rusty crappy cleats don't float so well. - frikken heavy.

Time Atac XS - So So So good... most comfortable pedal I have ever used - just heavy

Look Quartz Carbon - Light weight with similar engagement to Time, just not as positive. Mud shedding is better though. (currently use)

To answer Your question.. How good is Egg beaters??

Not nearly as good as Look Quarts, or the Shimano SPD/XT/XTR pedal. (For MTB)

The Eggbeater pedal to my experience is fine if you weigh up to 80Kg.

I was at 85 kg, and found that the spring/tensioner on the pedal lost its ability to keep shoes cleated. Then the other concern was the inner side bearing, which is a Nylon bush, just didn’t do it for me.

I moved over to XTR 980's and also ride the Look Quarts Cheapies R700-R800 ones and have a set of the Carbon TI's

Shimano - Def more robust, service spares more freely avail, even find it in Put Zonder Water.. (Tension adjustable)

Look- Could be seem as the lighter option to Shimano. (Non tension adjustable)

Eggbeater- ok if you under 80 Kg. (non tension adjustable)

Other Brands I'm dont know of.

Just my experience.
